Ok well the engineer came today to install my new firmware.

He said 1009 wasnt available for download so he reinstalled 1008 which made it go back to 1007.

Its a little odd though as now the blacks appear more grey when other people with the 1007 firmware said the 1008 made the blacks worse.

Im a little confused as too what to do now as i only wanted the 1009 firmware installed,it seemed like a simple request really.

Any advice guys?

OK, just checked back and see you have SS04 so there is a 1009 available for download by service engineers.

The highest for an SQ01 is 1007.1 - do you think he may have put the wrong one on? I'm sure I once heard that if you got it wrong it could result in poor colours and could safely be reflashed with the correct firmware.

I'd call Samsung and tell them that you have had a firmware upgrade and now the picture looks wrong

Well he actually installed 1008 but that made the set go back to 1007. It was with 1008 originally but i had to tell him i could see humbars (when i couldnt really,i just wanted the latest firmware and they wouldnt come out unless something was wrong with it).

After having chance to watch it a little more i can be sure of the difference in black levels. But they do seem a little grey now.

I cant really blame the engineer though as he just followed the advice on the samsung site of which firmware to install to get rid of humbarm,in this case it was reflash the tv with 1008. Sigh, nothing is ever simple!

If it has gone back to 1007 then it was flashed with 1007, re-flashing with 1008 would keep it at 1008, there is no way it would roll it back to a previous f/w. I fear the engineer made a mistake somewhere :thumbsdow

Well after watching sarah connor chronicles it seems the blacks are defo more grey. But thats really odd if it is on 1007 as 1008 was the one reported to give grey blacks, odd.

I wish i hadnt bothered now. Thing is if i ring samsung theyll probably send out the same engineer for my area. Any advice on how to get them to just update to 1009 with no hassle?

Just tell them you aren't happy

Ok thanks.

You mentioned in an earlier thread though that the 1009 firmware made the screen a little brighter.

Is it much brighter though or barely noticeable? I just dont wanna make the screen too bright thats all,i have quite sensitive eyes.

TBH I think that it is more to do with suddenly seeing the image in dynamic mode again.....probably takes a bit of tme to re-adjust to a calibrated image.

Anyhows, if it's too bright just turn it down :)

Ok mate. After watching tv for a while the blacks dont seem quite as good on the tv now. Ill give samsung a call tomorrow. Thanks for all your help!

OK, after 1 year and 21 days, this morning I have finally received a credit note from Samsung for a complete refund of my TV for the original price that I paid for it over a year ago.

I am about to hot foot it to the retailer to get a new telly

I have a Panasonic PZ81 (42") reserved. :smashin:

I hope it turns out to be a good telly, I might even change my mind when I get back into the shop (thinking PZ85 or W4500).

For those of you who are still not happy wth your F86 I will post my journey later when I have unpacked the new TV

Hi all,
I've made some changes to my Samsung F86 tv in to the service menu and now I want restore default values, how can I make a Factory reset for service menu settings? :lease:

The menu "reset" work only for "normal" tv values and not fot Service menu settings values!!

Thanks to all. :hiya:

I've just got my F86 back from being repaired, the screen had developed a fault. As part of the repair the firmware has been upgraded to 1009 and I can no longer see the humbars on any input.

I used to see this on all inputs and at all refresh rates, now don't have a problem with any inputs or refresh rates. 24Hz also appears fine, no more of the shimmering effect.

I suppose it's possible this is due to the new screen that was installed but I'm thinking it's more likely to be the firmware.

Cheers,

Eeeek, think you will need to post the exact values you require and hope a reader will jump into their service menu to compare

I changed my LE40F86 on Saturday via a credit note from Samsung. The TV I went for is the Panasonic PZ85, out of the box it wasn't super but after a few tweaks the SD picture is a little better than my F86 but the HD is mindblowing

I purchased my F86 in October 2007, noticed some wierd bars in November. Searched the web and this very forum confirmed to me that I had 'Hum Bars' and I set about getting it fixed.

In January 2008 it was upgraded at my house to f/w 1007, then in September it was upgraded to f/w 1009 - cleared most faults but very faint humbars remained on 50Hz (most visible using a static 20% amplitude test pattern) Returned to the engineer to be re assessed and pending an exchange.

To my horror, the service engineer reported to Samsung that the TV had no fault and I was basically 'seeing things'. I personally spoke to the company and argued with them and as they were unwilling to accept it was faulty or even send an engineer to look at it at my home I suggested that my eye was better than their engineers eye and that maybe they should be retrained to deal with modern technology (this didn't go down well). I informed Samsung that the repair company was wrong and the TV was faulty and they agreed to send it to be re-assessed - I suggested a 'conflict of interest' with the service engineers so they sent it to a different company who held my TV for 1 month whilst they communicated with Samsung. Last week my TV was returned un-repaired with a credit note to take it back to the original retailer to choose a replacement.

As said above, I got the PZ85 and most excellently.....a £100 refund

So, thanks very much to this forum and its users
thanks to Birmingham Specialised Service who 'COULD' see the fault that I described
Thanks to Samsung, who after nearly 13 months refunded my TV

And a massive thumbs down to Martin Dawes who for some reason unknown to me couldn't see the faults that everyone else could :lesson::thumbsdow

I have submitted a complaint to Martin Dawes stating that I was unhappy with them, giving them a chance to respond, and telling them that I would be posting them on this forum to hopefully encourage others to question them if they claim there 'is no fault'. Martin Dawes seem to be reluctant to comment, or even apologise as my inbox is still empty :hiya:

Thanks again for everyones help......it was a long battle, but got there in the end

You do know that the upgrade will reset everything back to factory default settings, so you wiill need to adjust your contrast/brightness etc ??

Yes I know, there wasn't custom setting before upgrade...
I think that noise is always present after upgrade,
regardless settings.

Well I think I've read just about all of this thread, but am still not 100% certain whether the 24Hz issue has been fixed by Samsung. I bought my Blu-ray player back in July (Panasonic DMP-BD50), but only recently noticed the flicker when playing discs at 24Hz. Samsung will not play ball as the set is over a year old now, but I have a 5 year warranty from John Lewis. I guess my question is whether I should pursue this, will I definitely get the flicker fixed or would I just be letting myself in for unnecessary grief (I've been in this situation with a previous TV which was practically wrecked by the "repairer" and all other aspects of the TV are fine)? Can anyone state what the definitive fix is for this issue? My current firmware levels are:

Type: SS04
Firmware Levels:
T-PONFMPEUMD-1003.1
T-PNRPEUS-1001.1
PEONY_ROSE_TR-1005.0

Thanks.

As you have an SS04 set, you should get an engineer to install the latest firmware which is 1009. Make sure this is the one that is installed as its the only one that fixes these problems - I had the same problem as you and this has definately cured the problem for me and lots of people on this site. Good luck!

Am currently in the process of trying to get my TV fixed.(24hz and 60hz humbars at 1080p, 60hz humbars at 1080i, unsure if happens in any other display types) According to the sticker on the side of my TV I have an SS04 panel.

I have had a new main board fitted and was told it would have latest firmware as had to be ordered in and came direct from samsung but has not fixed the problem

i am waiting for them to call me back to let me know whats going to happen next, any1 got any ideas what will happen next?

also, does any1 know any good ways to test for humbars, i curently use a language select screen on a bluray thru my ps3, but isnt always easy to see, and i would like something it really stands out on if i need to show the engineers again.

cheers in advance

hd test disk, 20% amolitude test works well.

Ideally you are looking for any dark patel coloured background which you can pause on.

As for the flicker at 24Hz, the disney/pixar logos show it up very well.

Next they will likely want to apply new firmware, how long have you had the TV and has it only had 1 repair? Samsung will want to try 3 before they will offer you a 656 or credit note, if you get to that, take the credit note and buy the 656 from the store as you will likely get a refund of a couple of hundred quid as well.

Good luck, it takes time and effort to get it sorted

hi, thanks for the reply.

i dont know how many attempts they will class it as

i have had tv since january.

reported fault and engineer came round and said new main board required, he sent of for it and another appointment was made for them to come and fit it.
a different engineer came round to fit it, didnt fix the problem, he said someone would call me back to let me know what is going to happen next, i left it a week and had no call, so called the engineers and they said job had been closed and i needed to re-report it to samsung.
did this and had another engineer visit, same bloke as first time, he checked it again, also used a HD streamer with some videos on to make sure its not my ps3 with the problem, problem shoed up with his equipment. he checked the firmware version in the manufacturers menu and then left, saying some1 will call me back once they have checked with samsung and let me know what they are going to do next.

if you get a credit note, is it for the full amount paid for the tv originally?

it would be a shame if they cant fix the tv, because i like the look of this one, not too sure about the rose black suround on the a656, although have only seen it in pictures.

im gonna give it til friday, and call them back if i havnt heard anything

It's not quite a credit note, it's actually a returns authorisation code but it states in the letter that they send you that it entitles you to a full refund of the initial purchase price of the TV. Which technically means you can take the money and run.

I changed my LE40F86 for a Panasonic PZ85 after 13 months and got a £100 refund, and I have to say that although the TV is not quite as good looking as the F86, it certainly has a better picture and I was surprised that the screen seems less reflective on the plasma than on the LCD....wierd :)

You have to push Samsung hard to get such a resolve, but t's worth it

Hi

I had a visit by Samsung technician to replace the panel, and I took some pictures while he was at it. It appears amazingly cheap, once you get a close look at it.

Well guys you will all be very surprised to find out that Samsung CS and there tech agent have done it again.

Brief resume of the problem.

Purchased 22nd March from Crampton & Moore

Humbars and 24hz flicker and TBE and or tearing which is really bad on HD.

Now first visit was for firmware back in June, did not fix problem with TBe but the humbars were better, this was to 1008

2nd visit had to take TV back to repair shop and fitted main board and said nothing wrong with it and I quote as per the service report. 'Xbox not compatible with the TV'

3rd Visit upgraded to 1009 but the TBE was still there so said they would order a new mainboard.

4th Visit fitted new main board (different engineer) Tested and humbars were back and tbe still there.

Now here is the choaker, the 4th engineers visit the guy was looking for the firmware in the DTV system menu, i told him that was the DVBT software version he said no it isnt its the only way to find the version. Nob head, he looked in the service menu and it was back to 1007, hence why now the humbars are back.

After this he said that there was no more they could do and that they would put in there report that they are unable to repair the problem.

Upon speaking with samsung again today to get my c/note, they spoke with the service centre and the answer that came back was 1st repair complete, 2nd report no fault found and complete, 3rd/4th repair complete and main board fitted as a precaution and xbox not compatible

They then said I could only have another repair or speak to some techy no-body to try and resolve the issue with the tv.

I got so angry

Have spoken with Crampton who are trying to deal with.

This is where I think I stand.

Firstly I can show the humbars on my PS3 will try the flicker on wall-e 24hz. Plus the TBE is evident on my hd drive (360)

2nd I believe I am within my right as I reported the fault within the first 3 months that I can refuse the product under sales and supply of goods act, as the tv having the fault as new, and to refuse the product as faulty.

Is this the concensus as I dont really want to get shirty with Crampton as they have been nothing but helpfull to date.

Thx for any advice peeps.

Edit:

Have spoken with Crampton again and a very helpful young lady has had the same lack of assistance from Samsung, she got the xbox not compatible cobblers too and made her thoughts known to them.

Apparently the Sammy rep is going in on monday so he is going to get a barrage of abuse.

Lets hope they get somewhere with him.
