Samsung HW-Q950A Soundbar Review & Comments

The current Q950A thread page 89:

"So my rears both died today, just wont pair no matter what I try. Man stuff today is just so poorly made"

You're just kidding yourself if you believe a Q950A isn't the same as a Q950T in almost every way, except a few feature additions, it has the same issues and a few new ones as well.
That was like the first complaint of the rears not pairing on this thread. The Q950T is full of that stuff and having random disconnection issues. Yes the Q950A has the bug with 5.1 content right now, but that is ONLY on adaptive mode, so who cares anyways. I am sure it will be fixed.

Steve.. Is there no way to add another 3rd party subwoofer to this setup? Why not at least add a sub out option on the wireless subwoofer itself? It seems like someone could come up with a mod to add a port to it by tapping into the board.

It's the one reason that keeps me from pulling the trigger on this. I would love to switch over to the atmos standard and this would make it so easy without having to purchase all the extra speakers, run wires and all the hassle involved with it. I already have an atmos avr but I run it in 3.1 because the wire runs are a real problem. This would be perfect but I know the sub is not going to compare to my SVS.

That has already been talked about on these forums. you can open the sub up and wire speaker wires directly to terminals on the speaker itself. You can also look on the Q950T forum as people did it on that sub as well.

Ok, well since my point is not to hijack this thread, please point me to all these posts that are there. I can't seem to find any. And as far as tying onto the terminals on the speaker itself, where are you running these? To a speaker level input on the new amp? Most of them that are higher end don't even have this except the svs sb-1000. Or to another sub without an amp and use the little amp in the suamung sub? I appreciate the thought but a broad as a matter-of-fact response doesn't really help. Thanks

Has any other owner had occurrences when the soundbar doesn't switch on automatically when the TV does?
I have had this a few times over the past couple of weeks. To get the soundbar on I either have to switch it on or toggle my TV to eArc and then it switches on automatically.

I have had no problems with eARC on my A90J. It has always come on when the TV has.

hi again...another question...would this soundbar be a bit of an overkill due to the size of my lounge?

Pic attached of lounge with approx measurements, and current setup with a 5.1 system.

Thanks

No I think that would be okay. You might get slightly less performance fro the side firing rear speakers but that would be about it. Only thing I might recommend is to pull the couches away from the wall slightly so you can put the rear speakers more behind them.

Also I can give you the rear speaker stands I use but they aren’t technically rated for the weight of them and you can’t fish the power cord down the center of them, which some people don’t like.

Hi Andy...thanks for the reply.

I'll give it a miss on your stands, but thanks for your kind offer.

Clive

Your room layout is almost identical to mine...including the French doors and open space to left of sofa except length of my room is 4m (as opposed to yours which is 5m).

The Samsung won't be overkill in that space at all. Only thing I'd change is perhaps put the sub behind the sofa that is at an angle at rear right of room as it may breath/sound a little better there. As it is, the side firing driver is right up against the left hand outside wall. I also prefer having the big sub out of sight. Best to experiment with location if you purchase it tho.

For stands. I got a lovely pair in white from Vebos: the specialist in wall mounts and floor stands

They also provided me me extra long white power cables. I needed longer cables for the sub and rear spks due to location my power outlets/wall sockets. Only negative is the 2 screws for rear of speakers do not fit so you will have to buy 2 of those separately- screw sizes are listed in online User Manual.

Odd, the screws that came with my Vebos black stands worked fine; perhaps yours was a packaging error.

The screw threads on the rear speakers is a 1/4” - 20, which is pretty common surprised a speaker stand wouldn’t come with that.

It was a bit strange. 1 of the 2 stands arrived damaged and Vebos sent me a replacement stand... and that also had the incorrect screws!
Thank you again for the recommendation- I am absolutely delighted with them. Will post a pic on here one of these days.

Yes it was a bit frustrating but very happy with stands regardless. Very impressed with Vebos tho- they also sent me 3 extra long white power cables with the stands for free. :)

I’m trying to update to the 1008 firmware and I can’t do it via USB (the bar won’t update) and the Smart Things App only gives the 1007.4 firmware update. Does anyone know how to get the latest firmware onto the bar?

Thanks,

Try turning off auto-update and try from SmartThings. Otherwise, if trying via USB, make sure you’re putting the extracted file onto the usb drive and make sure the drive is formatted properly.

I leave my 900A on auto update … took over a week after 1007 was released to self install … 1008 attached same day of release. Both occurred overnight..

Grazie

Thanks, that worked. Apparently the USB has to be formatted to FAT32. Once formatted I was able to update no problem.

Welcome to the forums. As this is a UK based forum, we kindly ask that posts are in English. online translation services work quite well for this. To get you going Google translate says:

“Hi I'm in Italy and I wanted to buy the samsumg hw 950a system, in Italy I saw that the zf version is sold which costs about 1500 euros. Outside Italy there is the samsung hw 950a en version, which instead costs 1100 euros. If I buy the en version, do I have problems using it in Italy? What do you recommend? Thanks”

i've just setup mine system more or less to my liking - i was very tempted to EQ everything and use it in lpcm via windows, but i figure its too much hassle.

with everything mostly at default i can say this thing blows my 5.1 separates completely.

i still don't understand or dare to understand the max levels as around 20-30 with a Marvel movie will pretty much sound close to cinema levels, and I am almost 14 feet away from the front bars.

the one thing i don't really get is the height effects. try as i may (height channels +3) i only get the occasional height effects audible.
i do have a rectangular room with hard ceilings at about 12 feet high, and everything is positioned as recommended. perhaps there is a particular good demo that i am not aware. Amaze from dolby is ok, but my library of movies are not really doing much.

with music, streamed over spotify, everything sounds fine. i tried some vocals (jackie cheung, queen) and instruments (yo-yo ma).

all in all, i would say its very hard to beat this price to performance. i was planning a new set of separates + atmos speakers and nothing comes close at this price. its a great bonus that the rear speakers are wireless. in the few days i have had this, it has not disconnected yet.

i got mine for about usd900 in malaysia with 2 years warranty.

cons - ok, the sub is not shake your seats off (i don't have it at +6 or whatever). i think bass junkies will not be considering this anyway. but it is very tight, does not sound like ported.

the whole reason i looked this way was because of the waf (wife acceptance factor) as we are moving from a house to a much smaller apartment and apparently a receiver is NOT something we want in our living room.

i am very happy with the size of the subwoofer it is right at the limit of acceptance, half the volume of my previous 10inch active.

i'm going crazy with the display being invisible. and this is actually a real problem.

i'm using adaptive mode, its fine. sorry for the lack of capitals, my shift key is broken. lol.
