Samsung HT-X310R won't play DVD-R or DVD+R discs?

Hi, I've just bought a new Samsung HT-X310R home cinema system from dixons and it won't play any of my normal DVD +R or -R discs! It will play originals, but not ones which I've made myself or transferred off VHS.
I've looked on Samsungs own site for a firmware upgrade or support but they don't even recognise the model!

PLEASE can someone help me with this? I asked in currys before buying and they told me it would play anything...

Yes I think so - they certainly work on other players.

I was thinking about buying this unit and had a look in the manual.

All it says is:

DVD±r/rW, CD-r/rW DivX Discs
Since this product only provides encoding formats authorized by DivX Networks, Inc., a DivX file created by the
user might not play.
Software updates for incompatible formats are not supported.
(Example : QPEL, GMC, resolution higher than 800 x 600 pixels, etc.)
Sections with a high frame rate might not be played while playing a DivX file.
