Ok, as this thread has gone off the rails a little and the good point by hancocaj I'm going to post some info on this set:

The TV has 2 HDMI 1.2v, 2 scarts (1rgb), component and VGA,
1080p can be done through all (other than the scarts)

It has not got freeview built in but this can be seen as a good thing (less to go wrong)

There is some overscanning through both hdmi's that cannot be turned off so 1:1 mapping is not an option. From what I've read it's about 5%. This appears to be the only thing wrong with this set, Samsung are aware of this and are looking into a solution.

All other comments have been extremely positive for the TV, picture quality is said to be very good with sky sd and hd. Users who have tried HD material have praised the set. Obviously, picture quality is down to the viewers eyes but I have read that it's on par with the Sony X series.

I'll try to keep this post up to date so please either PM me or reply at the end of the thread any additional information I have left out.

17th November 2006:
The overscan issue is also present with component with roughly the same %
(thanks Alpinester)

10th January 2007:
Thanks to Magoosteruk and others Samsung CS have firmware updates and leads to give a "Just Scan" option that will give 1:1 mapping through HDMI.

Original post:
According to the Samsung customer care centre nothing has been confirmed for the F series accepting 1080p, even though the site says it does!

All I want to know is if the 1080p is restricted to its HDMI jack or included in the VGA/Component jacks.....

"The new F series has not been officially confirmed as accepting the
1080P standard as yet, however the 1080i is compatible and will be
available when using HDMi or component connections, If the unit can
accept 1080P we can only assume this will be through the same inputs.
Please check www.samsung.com for future updates to this information as
the product is still new and information is still being built and
distributed.

I hope this has beenof some assistance to you. If you do have any
further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Kind Regards

I would'nt worry too much about what the customer care monkeys say, they normally have no clue as too specs, release dates etc etc.

Its been the same with Sharp UK and their XD1 range, they are a bunch of doughnuts.

Hi!

I'm afraid, that the F71 does not support 1080p over Component :( Look at this quick guide from the Samsung UK site:

http://org.downloadcenter.samsung.c...VPath=EM/200610/20061002195248734/EN/main.htm

Connecting Component Devices (DTV/DVD)
Connect component video cables (optional) to component connector (“PR”, “PB”, “Y”) on the rear of your set and the other ends to corresponding component video out connectors on the DTV or DVD.
If you wish to connect both the Set-Top Box and DTV (or DVD), you should connect the Set-Top Box to the DTV (or DVD) and connect the DTV (or DVD) to component connector (“PR”, “PB”, “Y”) on your set.
The PR, PB and Y connectors on your component devices (DTV or DVD) are sometimes labeled Y, B-Y and R-Y or Y, Cb and Cr.
Connect RCA audio cables (optional) to “R - AUDIO - L” on the rear of your set and the other ends to corresponding audio out connectors on the DTV or DVD.
This LCD TV displays its optimum picture resolution in 720p mode.
This LCD TV displays its maximum picture resolution in 1080i mode.

But more interestingly after that table it says:

Do not attempt to connect the HDMI/DVI connector to a PC or Laptop Graphics Card.
(This will result in a blank screen being displayed)

So why bother putting the connector on?

To connect up a HDTV source, such as Sky HD, or an upscaling DVD player, or a Hi Def disk player, etc...

They mean that it is an HDMI socket which will also take a DVI feed, if the connected device outputs at the accepted HDTV resolutions. There are several (older) upscaling DVD players, for example, which use a DVI output.

You have to look at the whole guide:

Supported modes for DVI or HDMI

50Hz X O X O O O O

What does this quick guide want to tell us? I'm really irritated.

According to someone on a Dutch forum (tweakers.net) who has just received his 40F71 both the HDMI and the component connections will accept 1080p.
The accepted VGA signals are as follows:

Great news looks like this will be my new TV

The two most anticipated pages from the manual:

Does this mean xbox 360 owners are going to be able to get full HD 1080p images using the new Samsung f7 40" TV. A yes will mean this is certainly my new tv. When is it due for release and does anyone know what the rrp will be?

Well, if the manual is right and there are no compatibility issues between the Xbox 360 and this Samsung then I don't see why not. It remains to be seen if the official Xbox 360 VGA cable is up to the 1920x1080 resolution (picture quality wise) however. But a nice Monster or other 3rd party VGA cable may fix that.

The 40" model is now starting to become available in the Netherlands and Germany for Internet prices as low as €1900 up to €2300.

Just had a good look at the manual. There is still no manual backlight adjustment. Why are Samsung not doing this.........?

What sizes will samung be doing in the F series

Thats good I might wait for the 46" as the jump to the 40" might not be big enough from 32" Samsung

Hi Benn0,

Could you pass on the urls for prices of around €1900 as I travel a lot to the Netherlands and Germany on business and the saving and no delay would make it worthwhile considering Samsung have a EU warranty!

Any urls that have a shop you can visit would be really great! ;)

I am not sure if you mean this, but I've read in a review for the Samsung M71, that the "Energy Saving Feature" in the Samsung is the same as backlight adjustment.

This function adjusts the brightness of the TV so as to reduce power consumption.
When you watching TV at night, set the "Energy Saving " mode option to "High" so
as to reduce the dazzling of your eyes as well as the power consumption.
1. Press the MENU button to display the on-screen menu.
Press the or button to select “Setup”, then press the ENTER button.
2. Press the or button to select “Energy Saving”,
then press the ENTER button.
3. Select the required option (Off, Low, Medium, High) by pressing
the or button. Press the ENTER button.
4. Press the EXIT button to exit.
Using the Energy Saving Feature

Any better prices than empire direct (£1799) out there? Is the price of this tv likely to drop when it is actually released fully in around ten days?
