Slew of cheap Android devices extends the advantage
The good news keeps coming in for Samsung today with research revelaing that they've grabbed more of the smartphone market share from Apple in the latest quarter, with sales of its phones accounting for one third of the global market.
It's not all bad news for Apple and sales of the iPhone 5 helped Cupertino grow its sales volumes by 6.6 percent for the quarter but even 37.4 million units sold in the quarter was not enough to stop its market-share sliding by 6.7% to 17.3 percent of the World market.
A glut of low cost Android devices saw Samsung's shipments rise by around 60 percent to 70.7 million, giving it a 32.7 percent of the total market, up from 28.8 percent, for the same period, a year earlier.
According to researchers IDC, Samsung shipped more smartphones than the next four biggest, combined, although Samsung and Apple have an enormous lead of LG Electronics, Huawei and ZTE Corp who are currently make up the rest of the 'Big 5'.
