I've had it a week now.
First off, the quality of the unit is good, the touch interface on the front works quite well with the slot loading tray.
The Samsung apps including iPlayer do work. Playback seems quite quick and quality is very good from BBC HD. I do find navigating the iPlayer home page (the sliders) very jerky.
I had to run a couple of updates to SmartHub first - it's not very intuitive at first.
The main player interface is more graphical than the Sony so it feels a tiny bit slower.
The DLNA play back is excellent - it handles DivX 3, Xvid and several MKVs in DivX HD and H264. It also has the option to alter 4:3 content to original or stretch to 16:9. As a DLNA player it is far ahead of the Sony in every aspect. It is also completely silent during DLNA playback.
I am not using wireless, using LAN btw.
Now here comes the problem. I have used slot load drives before (e.g. Pioneer) and I am used to them sounding like fans when running at full pelt. The drive doesn't make any high pitch noise or any kind of "electronic" noises like the Sony drive.
It is however noiser than the drive in the Sony S370. I placed both players next to each other playing the same exact movie which I borrowed off my sister - Stargate Special Edition - and the Samsung was louder by some margin. It does reduce in noise when played back. The test setup was fairly similiar, except my Sky HD box was on top of the Samsung player. I unplugged the Sky box to rule out that as a noise source.
So I don't know if I should keep it or give another Sony a shot. I really wanted a decent DLNA player with 3D. Obviously the Sony is a very weak player often having issues with MKVs not working and no 4:3 content resize option.
So I guess I wished I never sold my AC Ryan PlayON HD now!!
Gonna do some more testing this weekend
