Samsung BD-D6500 3D Blu-Ray player

Looking for a viable 3D blu-ray player and found the Samsung BD-D6500. It seems to be very nicely priced with 3D, apps, DLNA, wireless LAN etc.

Can't seem to find a thread on it anywhere.

In the past I would have sticked to Sony but after returning a 570 due to a high pitch noise the drive makes I want to try something different!! I'm not taking the risk with the 480.

Does anyone own this yet? What is the interface like? drive noise? playback formats? e.g. Xvid/MKV h264?

I have the exact same question! I returned a Sony BDP S770 due to the high pitched noise, and I've read reports that the 2011 models have the same issue so want to change to another brand. I like the design of the Samsung BD 6500. Now I'm looking for confirmation about its quietness in operation - something that rarely seems to get commented on in reviews, but something I consider very important. So any Samsung DB 6500 owners out there please let us know!

I've had it a week now.

First off, the quality of the unit is good, the touch interface on the front works quite well with the slot loading tray.

The Samsung apps including iPlayer do work. Playback seems quite quick and quality is very good from BBC HD. I do find navigating the iPlayer home page (the sliders) very jerky.

I had to run a couple of updates to SmartHub first - it's not very intuitive at first.

The main player interface is more graphical than the Sony so it feels a tiny bit slower.

The DLNA play back is excellent - it handles DivX 3, Xvid and several MKVs in DivX HD and H264. It also has the option to alter 4:3 content to original or stretch to 16:9. As a DLNA player it is far ahead of the Sony in every aspect. It is also completely silent during DLNA playback.

I am not using wireless, using LAN btw.

Now here comes the problem. I have used slot load drives before (e.g. Pioneer) and I am used to them sounding like fans when running at full pelt. The drive doesn't make any high pitch noise or any kind of "electronic" noises like the Sony drive.

It is however noiser than the drive in the Sony S370. I placed both players next to each other playing the same exact movie which I borrowed off my sister - Stargate Special Edition - and the Samsung was louder by some margin. It does reduce in noise when played back. The test setup was fairly similiar, except my Sky HD box was on top of the Samsung player. I unplugged the Sky box to rule out that as a noise source.

So I don't know if I should keep it or give another Sony a shot. I really wanted a decent DLNA player with 3D. Obviously the Sony is a very weak player often having issues with MKVs not working and no 4:3 content resize option.

So I guess I wished I never sold my AC Ryan PlayON HD now!!

Gonna do some more testing this weekend

It doesn't have a 2d-3d converter. Not sure about the app.

I watched another blu-ray yesterday, for some reason playing "Grown Ups" the drive noise was very quiet.

well......... the reason i got the 6500 was for the 2d-3d converter as listed on the samsung website Give your living room the wow factor - BD-D6500 3D SMART Blu-ray Player - Blu-Ray Players - Blu-ray Players | SAMSUNG (listed under features) this is where it gets complicated!
so i called samsung who were very insistent that its not possible for a player to convert 2d-3d! i told them panasonic do it too
they proceeded to tell me that the 2d-3d converter just means that it will downconvert a 3d film to play in 2d
so i pointed out if that is the case then your website states that the 5500 doesnt have a 2d-3d converter so does that mean it wont play normal 2d movies? silence...... "ill just check with a product advisor".... "can we take your details and call you back"
no call back yet:(
if you check the specs for the 5500 on the samsung site it does say converter NO fingers crossed for a FW update in the next few days with 2d-3d enabled and not just a sorry and all evidence of it erased from the website!
if anyone else has a 6500 please call samsung and raise the issue if possible please:lease:

I have tested another blu-ray - Lost Series 1 Disk 1 - the drive noise is fine. Seems to be an issue with Stargate Special Edition for some reason, the drive stays ramped up when playing.

BUT, now for some reason after moving the player about a bit (turned off I was trying to see if there was a fan inside) it wont get a network connection

There is a new firmware, June 8th. Second firmware to be released, flashing now.

Edit: Unplugging from the mains fixed the network issue

I’ve just put an order in for one of these after much deliberation, but I had one query and I can’t find a definite answer anywhere – anyone know if there is a multi region hack?;)

I've had a couple of issues since buying the player:

The DLNA playback sometimes cuts off after 10 seconds. The only way to fix this is a proper reboot of the machine

There is no way to turn off the player completely, it kind of goes into a soft off mode.

I nearly bought it too - for the same reason.

Someone needs to tell Amazon to correct their listing - as otherwise they're likely to get quite a few returns :thumbsdow

The reason I didn't buy was because I downloaded the manual first and there's nothing in it about 2D->3D :(
