Received my HD950 this morning and had a bit of a play around with it. Got it plugged into my Pio 435XDE via HDMI and my first impressions are that it is okay, although I don't think it is much if any better than my Denon 2900 via component.
I was curious to see if a budget end HDMI player could out do my Denon which was why I bought it. I was struggling to push myself into parting with the cash for a hi-end HDMI player, especially with HD-DVD upcoming. I think I will be sticking with my Denon for now to be honest.
Played around with the HDMI settings for a while trying 576P, 720P and 1080i and none of them looked any better than the Denon to me? I think I will save up my money for HD-DVD or see what PS3 looks like for DVD playback? Oh and by the way, 950 seemed to multi region hack okay with the 945 hack.

BigMack, where did you get yours from, these seem to be hard to get hold of from what I've seen posted on these forums...

I'm tempted, just to give DVD-Audio and SACD a try...

Pre-Ordered mine from Digiuk at the end of June. They said they would be receiving stock 18th July and it arrived with me today so pretty good.

If this is finally shipping it can't be long before the 1050 and 1150 are announced and the rumour and conjecture starts all over again...PJ :)

Samsung HD-950 downrezed ( 480P) on component outputs while DVI/HDMI have full HDTV upconverted output. Instructions for HDCP and region free hack also makes component upconvert full HDTV link as follows -

    http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks.php?dvdplayer=samsung+950&hits=50&Search=Search

Region code hack posted by nedear88, June 26 2005:
    ********NOTICE********

I'm not responsible for the damage/malfunction to your DVD player for using the below listed hack, use it at your own risk and be prepare that the unit may not work properly after the modification on the unit.

I tried at my risk of damaging the DVD player but it works.

    Hacks for DVD-HD950 (Region 1)

This required the connection the unit thru it's composite or component output (not HDMI) to TV.

    1. HDCP-Free: Requires only DVD Remote.
    2. Power On DVD player, wait until "no disk" display
    3. Press "Angle"
    4. then number on the remote "4", "3", "2", "7"
    5. TV Screen displays "HDCP Free"
    6. Press "Angle" to turn off the "HDCP Free" display
    7. Try 1 more time from step 1-6 (HDCP Free will display)

Removing the HDCP also turn the DVD-HD950 into region free player, I tried the repeat + code trick...it doesn't work, then I tried the Angle + code and the TV screen shown "HDCP Free". I put in a Region 3 disc...it play, swap region 1 disc...it play too, owesome!

Also...turn off HDCP will enable you to use the component with adjustable resolution to it's capabiltiy (480P, 720P, 768P & 1080i), to further utilized highest resolution with my Samsung HPR-4252 plasma TV, I connected the DVD-HD950 thru it's HDMI output to the plasma TV, it works as well as the components connection except the HDMI produce much more vivid color.

I purchased this player thru Dell.Inc for $229 in early June, try to find coupons code from the web and it may sometimes discounted to 10-25% off + free shipping. I got this unit in 2 business day no shipping from Dell.

The player does not have DCDI logo as shown on the DVD-HD 941, the picture quality is good...can't compare to HD broadcast from Direct TV or cable, but it's almost there.

By switching the resolution from 480p to 720P, 1080i not a big different but only gain better details at 720p or 1080i, for folks that have HDTV this is must have in order to fully utilized the 1080i or 720p resolution format.

I am not sure the Macrovision still enable or not since I am not planning making any dub to other sources.

Have fun and good luck in hacking business.

I lived with my Sammy DVD-HD745 for a few months using the DVI output into my Sagem HD-D45 and was impressed with the results. Did try the sammy's component connection once but it was very disapointing.

Recently aquired a Toshiba SD-240E for about £30 and the component output is noticably better quality than the DVI on the samsung.

Will be sticking with the Toshiba for now...

Got mine yesterday and set up today - a great machine for the money but
anyone who has upgraded, like me, hoping that some of the niggles with the 945 have been sorted is going to be disappointed - the on-screen message setting problem is still there for example.

peahead - you get both those leads (as with the 945).

btw, if anyone needs an HDMI-DVI cable I have a one spare unused one from my 945 - first person to pm me who wants it can have it.

The lead is going to BeStu (subject to them sending an address).

It is 2 metres long and I have already sold the 945.

I have to say I am very unimpressed with DigiUK though, after Bigmac1 ordered his in June and has received it,I preordered mine in April and there is no sign of anything from them.It is certainly the last thing I will be ordering from them,I can't believe they have had my cash for 3 months and they can't even send them out in order, pathetic!

What digiuk did to you was unacceptable but id lay the blame with samsung in the july issue of homecinemachoice in the news section it says the samsung hd-950 will have limited distribution why i dont now.

Is this player only available in black? I've only seen black, but that picture on eBuyer looks suspiciously silver...

Thanks for that Rezillo,I had missed it.I sent an email to DigiUk yesterday to cancel my order and received a reply this morning with a similar apology. It may seem stupid to wait all this time and then cancel but I find this unforgivable.

They have at least promised that mine will be sent out this week.

Digiuk have received some praise for their customer service on usenet over the years so I'm prepared to go along with them for the time being. I don't think they've handled this situation well, though, to say the least, but it should only make a week's difference in delivery, which is not the end of the world.
