Had one for nearly 3 years & am very happy with it.
Only use it for DVDs ( not CD).
Are latest models better? If so in what way?
Don't want to miss out especially as prices have come down so much.

Would appreciate recommendations if there are there are superior models up to £300.

    Thanks

Much better and you don't have to spend anywhere near £300.

I had my 709 for a few years and was very happy.. But I wanted an SVCD (CD) solution.

I looked for a replacement of almost a year and eventually bought the Pioneer 545 for around £250.

Its lightyears ahead of the Samsung in terms of picture and sound quality.

You can now buy the new Pioneer 454 for about £170 and that would be a similar improvement over the Samsung.

Saying that, the 709 is still an impressive piece of kit and whilst there is a marked improvement, the 709 is still fine.. Unless you have spare cash that you need to spend, you could question if there is any point upgrading the 709 unless you REALLY need to.
