Can someone please confirm that I've got this right.

    1) The 409 and the 419 are basically the same TV with these differences:

    • 409 - black and silver finish, no freeview tuner.
    • 419 - black finish, with freeview tuner
    2) The 429 is essentially a replacement for both of these, but with:
    • all silver finish
    • no freeview
    • longer tube to (hopefully) alleviate the geometry issues
    3) All the other letters wrapped around the 3-digit numbers (e.g. WS32Z429TQXXEU and WS32Z409TQX) are irrelevant, not because they mean nothing but because there are no variations which signify colour, whether there is a stand etc

    :lease:

dont believe they have a longer tube , believe they are all the same models different skins.

same models , same problems , its a luck thing
had an engineer round today and he was saying the geometry was made worse when the tv's were bashed around in transit.

Could have sworn I read here in one of the 409/419/429 threads that they'd lengthened the neck by a small amount to cure, or reduce, the geometry problems...??

Think it was an assumption following some information on the AVSForums in the States.

If there is an improvement in the geo of the 429 it will probably be due to an improvement in quality control.

have been reading the various threads for the last few days lots of good helpful comments decided to have a physical look today

I went into Comet today had a chat with the sales man who told me that the only difference apart from colour / with freeview (428 no HD) is that the 429 HD model now has HDMI

so now Comet have 1 model 428 with digital freeview but not HD

429 which is HD but will rely on you having SD to feed it

I also went into Currys their salesman was a waste of space, but they did have the black model 419 and for looks it beats the 429 hands down all day long imho it is also HD ready and gives you a digital tuner????

so now I am going back to thinking about the black model its hardly earth shattering not to have HDMI is it

I wouldn't bother if I were you. I am onto my third 419 each one I have had has had diffrent problems:

Set 1: Switches off automatically when you switch on your HDMI source.

Set 2: Picture skewed 2/3 of the way down and high pitch buzzing intermittent.

Set 3: Picture still skewed Moire pattern on HDMI and flickering either side of the set vertically.

Been into the engineers menu on all TV's no change.

These sets are a joke. Nice idea but they just don't work.

I am currently awaiting an engineer this afternoon to give me a refund code so I can go get a plasma.

Interesting that Currys describe the 419 as HD Ready when it doesn't have HDMI - is that not a sine qua non for being officially HD Ready?

A 2nd Freeview tuner would be handy, for when I'm recording one channel & want to watch another, and black does look a lot better than silver...

    Hmm - more research.

And yes, I know I'll be taking a gamble, but:

    1) ATEOTD I can always get my money back if I can't get a good one.

    2) How common are the problems anyway? There are people here who say theirs is OK, and as someone pointed out on one of the other threads, how many people have come here just because they've got a dodgy one, and found the site when googling the model? How many people with a good one think "I know - I'll look for an internet forum to tell people about it"?

I went and ordered the set today from Currys got for 470 with free deliv, now I know a lot on the forum have had probs but you gotta wonder if the things sell out all over then the actual % of returns may be quite low, this is what I'm hoping for anyway

The 419 does have an HDMI socket.
