We watched The Three Amigos yesterday. Great film, travels well. It occured to me that Galaxy Quest is a very similar story line, just using a different genre to depict the idea.

There are probably a lot of cases of this around, must almost be breaching a copyright law or two.

When I picked the paper up to read what was on the TV yesterday and read the plot, it too immediately struck me as the same plot as Galaxy Quest
Mind you look how many similar films come out at the same time Armageddon and Deep Impact. If not a major studio film there is generally a TV move out just before the major release.
How many different Die Hard films have there been? Under Siege 1 and 2, and Cliffhanger to name a few.

The Last Castle had several themes, characters and plotlines which were very reminiscent of One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.

    Similar story, different situation.

I believe there are only seven 'main storylines' anyway and all films fall into one of them.

Anybody know what the 'seven' are?

'Rags to Riches', 'Role Reversal', 'Boy Meets Girls' spring to mind.

Not different location but same story:Rio Bravo and El Dorado both with John Wayne and directed by Howard Hawks.
Gladiator and The Rise and Fall Off The Roman Empire.
    LA Takedown and Heat.

Man on Fire and Man on Fire. One filmed in Italy the other in Mexico.

The most famous one is Seven Samurai, which spawned The Magnificent Seven and Battle Beyond the Stars. The last 2 both starded Robert Vaughn in similar roles.

Also Yo Jimbo became A Fist Full of Dollars and The Last Man Standing.

    These come to mind:

Revenge over some incident - murder usually -
    Redemption (bad guy turns good)
Escape - (all disaster movies, for example)

I once read, possibly here, someone suggesting A Bugs life was a blatant rip off of Three Amigos.

Haven't seen the original, Seven Samurai is it?

I seem to remember even the Three Amigos plot line was use before. Something like someone hires a gunman with an undeserved reputation or gets mixed up and hires the wrong person. Then in the end they shine through.
