after finally adding the original Criterion disc to my collection today I've done a little checking and it seems when the film was released the only fully uncut version was German, even the Italian version was cut.
Anyone know if the movie ever got a German release.?

IMDB displays a link to Amazon, which can be useful as a quick check to see if discs are available (top right, under 'shop').

http://uk.imdb.com/Title?0073650 -- In this case the only links are for US & UK dvd's, and US vhs - the German fields are blank, suggesting not available.

there is a french DVD as well, with french subs only though (not imposed!!) and french and italian DD mono
pal running time 111min
details for french DVD
french DVDs should be uncut
The french version is also a limited numbered release. i COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING ABOUT A GERMAN dvd damn caplock:p

QUOTE:
The question of the uncut version of Salò, rats or no rats, is something that goes beyond simple philology. One contemplates it with the same anxiety with which one opens a chamber of horrors. In Italy we fantasize about the sequences the producer might have kept for his own collection. A worrying fact: when the film was presented at the censorship commission three days after Pasolini died, a length of 3297 metres was declared; in reality, the length is 3192 metres. Some Italian reviews of the time speak of a quotation of poetry by Gottfried Benn (in the scene in which Bonacelli drives the victims down the stairs): but this remains only in the German version, and is excised from the usual Italian version and also from the Criterion disc.

No. I've never yet seen a film that's as 'unpleasant and disturbing as its made out to be' and, believe me, I've been trying to find one that lives up to the claims for the past 17 years!

That said, Salo isn't your average popcorn flick. To some it is just exploitative rubbish, to others it's a cleverly made, highly personal (to Passolini) political and moral allegory.

As ever, the best thing to do is watch it and make up your own mind.
