The state of AV retail in Australia. Over the last 3 or 4 weekends I have been conducting a survey of retailers in Melbournes East and South East suburbs, I will not name names (I would like to though) but the results are interesting. The question I asked was I have been reading about this thing called progressive scan, what is it and can you demo it for me? out of the 56 sales staff I queried 4 knew what progressive scan was 1(yes one) knew how to hook it up and get it working correctly - and only because this guy is an enthusiast. 38 complained of a lack of training, but tried to help. 10 did not give a stuff. 4 were down right arrogant pigs and could not believe that a customer would have the audacity to get them to do some work. Equipment installation at most of these shops was terrible bar one. EG. It is a bit sad to see a beautiful sony top of the line CRT 576p/1080i TV running PAL COMPOSITE when it has a price tag of around AU $5000, I think customers are entitled to a picture with a great deal of WOW GE WIZ COR factor at this price range. The young salesman let me connect a sony DVPNS730 DVD player and WOW what a Result, when watching the lord of the rings DVD in 576p. Maybe sony could bundle this player with the TV set. Sorry Sony but the geometry was way out. It was not surprising that this top of the range sony TV has been on the shop Floor for a very long time. Another retailer had 2 rear projection models that only do 480p NTSC! I did not see one rear projection TV set up properly. I witnessed many customers walk out in discust. anyway I posted this just to get a thread going - I would love to know of other peoples experiences, good, bad and ugly Is there are any suggestions on how to remedy this situation? Are other countries doing it the same as Melbourne AU?
