Beach holidays everytime for me. Going to Stoupa in Greece in a few weeks, usually its the Greek Islands. My favourite is Lefkas/Lefkada.

In Mrch/April we usually have a week in Portugal, truly wonderful beaches.

good on you martin. We have a 40ft yacht berthed in vounaki which we use in june and september.. either side of the busy season. Sailing around lefkas, meganisi and kefalonia has to be the best way to spend time ever. Water is gorgeous. Can go anywhere that we want to even up to croatia or italy. Find deserted beaches and bays to go for a dip or sunbathe on deck or on the sand with some food. Then pull alongside at a taverna for a draft beer in a frozen glass, a greek salad, some tzatziki and a slow roasted joint of lamb... What in blue hell could be better?
For me.. Thats a beach holiday. Only i choose the beaches. I wouldnt even dream of going to somewhere like tenerife again. Last year i took my girlfriend to Parga which is on the Greek mainland, Ionian side about an hour north of Preveza airport. First week in June, nice and quiet but not deserted.Plenty of things to do, lovely little island in the middle of the bay to explore, boat trips out to paxos to see dolphins and caves. Big sandy beach, medium stoney beach and small secluded stoney beach. Great place and recommend to anybody

Oh now that sounds wonderful. 40ft Boat?? , we usually hire one on those 40hp speed boats and go to Meganisi and moor up on the Onassis Island (and get chased by armed guards, it's prohibited to go on that Island).

We are thinking about a sailing holiday with friends sometime next year around the Greek Islands, sounds like heaven.

Martin.
If you even thought of getting on a boat in the ionian then i know you will enjoy it! 40ft isnt huge mind! sleeps 8 uncomfortably!! but they dont tell you that in the brochure! i think on a beneteau 381 like ours your better off with 4 people, or 5 if that includes kids. 2 adults in forward cabin, 2 smaller kids can double up in aft cabin. 2 adults a squeeze, then lounge can be converted into bed but it looks messy! step up to 44feet and you get tons more room 50ft or bigger and your laughing.
Sunsail are the biggest operators in the ionian, and we keep our boat with them. They run bare boat charters and flotillas so if your not confident with sailing then you can have a skipper and cook/engineer on board your boat or you can follow a flotilla around. If you do sail (or at least motor) then charter a bare boat and soak it up. The breeze when your on the move means you can sunbathe all day and never break a sweat!
If you do it, make sure you visit kefalonia, get yourself a meat pie! and visit the pontoon they built for captain corellis mandolin. Unfortunatly its mostly been taken apart by people for ebay i guess! Nice spot for a swim though.
Nydri or Nidri is on the the biggest places, bit commercial, i wasnt a fan. Little Vathi, Big Vathi, Sivota, Kalamos, Spartahori, Vassiliki and Aberliki Bay are all great places to berth for the night.
Get yourself on a boat and see the rest of the ionian mate!

Brilliant, thanks for that, will certainly be giving it a go.

I know what you mean about Nidri being a little commercial, never found it over commercialised myself but it is busy in comparison to many resorts I have been to.

However, it's my favourite holiday place. I have a picture of a house on my office wall that I took a couple of years ago. I keep saying to myself that I will buy that one one day. In reality though, we will be buying one in Portugal because the flights to Greek Islands are extremely expensive in comparison.

depends when you book mate! if your being safe and booking early then yes. 200ish. But there has been times when my dads crew (no hes not in a gang.... i mean his sailing crew) have flown over before us and tried to persuade him to go out early... looked on the net and seen flights for £35 return to preveza

It's something we have been looking into. We will be wanting to go as much as possible, maybe every other weekend and with many flights to portugal from £9.99 return, it seems that at the moment it is one of the cheapest places to get to, along with Spain (don't like the place).

Won't be happening until next year so who knows, Greece it may be.
