A colleague's laptop has gone skewiff today, seems to be transferring files from one part to another.
Something to do with a smart card reader.
I admit, I know nothing about smart card readers but I can see his laptop is fitted with a slot which looks like it would take a smart card of some kind.
Would I be safe enough to uninstall it?

I would be concerned that dismounting it stopped the pc working so make sure you have a restore point set. Also, if you decide to re-activate it, then make sure you have the neccessary driver available. You could check to see what processes are running: one may be expecting a response from the reader so killing the process may be all you need to do.
