SACD vs DVD Audio

In the quote of me above, it was supposed to be " ...not so sleepy London Town", btw. I'm sure somethin' is seepy or seep-ing in London. I'm just not quite sure what it is?

I hope the Sones discs hit the stores there soon! The Stones 12 x 5 is one of the best sounding of the lot, according to me. I just got THE SINGLES COLLECTION (3 discs) but have yet to listen to it.

Some other good and recent releases:

Grant-Lee Phillips' MOBILIZE, Zoe (Rounder) SACD 01143-1021-6, stereo. Nice pop rock album with all instruments played by the his lonesome. Pretty good, but would of been better with a talented drummer, the drum machine is used a bit too much. None the less, it's an intresting album.

If you'ins likes jazz, Eden Atwood's WAVES-The Bossa Nova Session is a hot new release. Groove Note, GRV1012-3, stereo. She's quite a jazz singer. I've heard all but 1 of Groove Note's SACD releases. They're all winners. The Anthony Wilson Trio, Jay McShann, Jacintha, Bennie Wallace...great label.

The first two Creedence Clearwater Revival discs are due soon.

Rachael, I note you mention the Alison Krauss title and say it's great in stereo SACD, CD or 5.1 SACD.

I was under the impression that hybrid disks only had enough space for 2 formats (eg. CD and stereo SACD or CD and 5.1 SACD).

Is it possible to fit all 3 tracks on one SACD? I have a few SACD's and they usually have either just stereo SACD or stereo and 5.1 SACD with no CD layer.

I'm glad that there are more titles coming out over there, it would make sense to establish it in one market first (US of course) before pushing it worldwide. Much less loss if it bombs. It's tough for us over here but there you go, we can order US stuff over the net easilly now and the exchange rate makes it cheaper than over here.

I note that Plays selection of SACD disks is growing slowly and they are now down to £14.99 which is some progress. That's not much more than you would pay in the shops for a new release CD.

By the way, I understand the high end boys saying that SACD is dissapointing but I think where it wins is making low end equipment (my Sony 700 DVD/SACD and 1080 amp) sound much, much better than it should.

I love SACD myself and hope it survives. I don't think DVD-A will.

Steve

Steve, the SACD stereo & 5.1 program are on the same layer on all discs hybid or not. The CD layer on the hybrid discs is on a seperate layer. One of the things I really like about SACD is the possibility of having 3 soundtracks on most discs. Some old stuff will not be remixed into 5.1 despite many folks desire to have everything presented that way. In the future I'm counting on 3 tracks on all newly recorded music most of the time.

Sony is hurting their own format by not switching to all hybrid discs. Well, Warner is doing worse by DVD-A by hardly releasing anything. I like DVD-A's sound just fine. What I don't like about it is the players, and the authoring standards or lack of sensible ones. I'd like DVD-A better if there were specialized DVD-A players, they could play CD's too... DVD-A is just a throw in on most of the video players. The bass management is worse than SACD's by a fair margin. It's all moot if Warner doesn't release titles anyway.

Steve, the Alison Krauss NEW FAVORITE disc is Rounders' first M-C release. I expect we'll see more M-C from them. Their stereo SACD's, all hybrids of course, sound very nice to me. I just got the Grant-Lee Phillips disc. It's a intresting album. Anyway, the Krauss disc really highlights SACD's potential. The DSD recorded BLUE COUNTRY HEART by Jorma Kaukonen, a Sony single-layer, would be my best disc if only it was a hybrid. It could be Sony's best disc, sound quality-wise?

Steve, I think SACD can compete fairly well with vinyl. Some vinyl will sound better but some SACD's will win. CD was never competition for vinyl IMO. SACD and DVD-A bring so much more to the plate. I think the Stones LET IT BLEED sounds pretty much on par with the record. The CD layer sounds about the best CD can be too, me thinks. Atleast it's possible with the new formats to compete with analog. I broke 100 SACD's this week. I'm liking the format! The hybrid format most especially. Two-thirds of my collection are hybrid discs. I'm thinking of breaking down and buying Joe Satriani's STRANGE BEAUTIFUL MUSIC on Sony single-layer disc. I heard the CD recently and was really impressed. Damn, I wish Sony would make hybrids....! Best wishes!:)

Thanks for your thoughts Rachael. I also think that the success of SACD hangs on hybrid disks. Take me as a classic example. I'm buying disks at the mo that may well be obsolete in 2 years time. I've spent hundreds on SACD's and SACD may die. I guess I can always keep a SACD player but I would be much more comfortable if they had a CD layer too. Also, how do I play these SACD's in my car? How do I play them on my notebook PC?

A CD layer is crucial for the smooth introduction of this format. I heard Sony were stopping production of CD's and going entirely hybrid. That would be good.

As for DVD-A, I'm sure it can compete just fine with SACD, some say it's better. I'm not the man to ask but it seems awkward and inconvenient that it can only be played in a DVD-A player (as with non-hybrid SACD's of course). The point is, there are no plans to make this so and I think this will keep the format in the background.

Have you got the release of 'Thriller' on SACD? If so, what you think? I bought it just for fun, not a whacko fan at all but it sounds great to me.

Steve

Steve, I don't think I want to sit through THRILLER again, and certainly not pay for it when I could be buying something I really like instead. I'm really wanting to see a bit more rock music on SACD. I don't like to listen to all jazz, but I like it, like it, yes I do. I'm ready for more rock titles this season, I hope. I'm waiting for the first two Creedence titles, WILLY AND THE POOR BOYS & COSMOS FACTORY to finally release. They've been oft' delayed, reportedly by the Stones' discs. I was by Best Buy 2-day and they did't have Joe Satriani's STRANGE BEAUTIFUL MUSIC in stock on SACD. I was gonna get a copy.

I wish Sony would stop talking about hybrids and release them! Are they daft? Hello, hello, Sony! I need the CD layer for other players, MD recording, and the like. Their single-layer discs P'me off. The other labels have shown me the light. I buy a Sony disc on occasion if I can't resist. Mostly I resist, I figur the lot will be re-released as hybrids if the format survives. I shop the other labels before Sony. I hope Sony gets it together pronto. They do control alot of stuff I'd like to hear on SACD at the end of the day.

You should do like me and shop for hybrids and wait for Sony to get it together. You'd think it would be quick too as Sony eyes ABKCO's sales of the Stones discs which have done very well here. My brother-in-law bought a couple of them and is looking for an SACD player or DVD/SACD player, whatever his mate allows. She rules with an iron fist too I might add!

SACD is picking up some steam here despite Sony! Best wishes! :) !

I bought a couple of DVD-A titles, and I don't have a DVD-A player. However, I'm well impressed with being able to hear an album in DTS or 5.1!

I really like the idea, and I hope it takes off. I was blown away by the quality of the sound on the Paul Simon album (I forget the title: I'm not a massive fan of his, but I wanted to hear the format).

Since I was about 12 I really wanted to hear quadrophonic sound, but it had already died at that point as a format. I hope this doesn't go the same way: I've been waiting 18 years to hear this sort of thing!

By the way, DVD-A is a really dodgy name. The guys who write South Park have a band called DVDA, apparently it's an acronym for an explicit act in hard-core porn movies (the D's stand for 'double'....).
