SACD players

Hi,
I thinking of getting a SACD player but I'm not certain irf the ability of these varies that much. Can anyone tell me of their experiences and recommend any to demo. I don't really want to pay too much money but if the difference between say a £150 player and a £300 is huge then I'll bite the bullet.

Cheers

for sacd only you want to try the new equivelant of sony's scdxb780, thats about all that's worth checking out.
With DVD players Denon dvd2200 @ £400 or pioneer DV565 @ about £230

The difference between a player at £150 and a player at £300 will be negligible. Try comparing £300 players with £1000 players and them with £3000 players and you might start to see where your money is going.

For someone who has so much expensive equipment anyway why would you even consider buying a low end player for less then £1000.

One of the reasons that I'm initially looking at players at this level is that when I've compared the DVD-A output of my FMJ27A with that of a Pioneer 565 I've found it hard to tell the difference. With CD its no competition but DVD-A I can't honestly say hand on heart that there was a huge difference. The only way I'll tell for certain is a long term demo.

Steve, thanks for the classified heads up

the 670 was £200 not £300 rrp
also it would probably be an unfair test if you don't use a decent DVD-A disc, read the info on the back, so far i've only found one full spec disc "The Eagles - Hotel California" is one of the very few 96@6ch/192@2ch, in fact you'd be lucky to find any that are more than 96@2ch!!
Choose your test disc wisely
IMHO SACD and DVD-A do sound much better on more expensive players.
I found I only use the stereo track in reality.

Being doing a bit of research and was quite inteested in the Philips DVD963SA and DVD763SA. Anyone heard these, how they compare to other SACD players or the differences between the 2?

My first SACD player was a Sony two-channel, non-DVD model.
I now use a Philips DVD-963SA for SACD, prefer it to the Sony, obviously it plays multi-channel too, as well as playing back normal CDs very well, either using it's Upsampling or not.
I prefer 963 to my Naim CD player in fact, although DVD-A from my Denon DVD-3800 is probably my favourite, depending on disc of course.
Philips will have a new range of players out soon , 963 is nearing the end of it's run so wait and see what replaces it.
If I were buying now my choice would be a universal player.

Thanks Gringo,
Was only looking at the Philips as a SACD player, going to keep my Arcam DV27A for DVD, CD & DVD-A.
Is the 763 any less of a player than the 963 as far as SACD is concerned?

DVD-763SA available @ £111.00 ( opened box ) at www.unbeatable.co.uk probably even cheaper somewhere.
Considering 963 originally cost twice 763, partly for visual performance of Faroudja DCDi but different audio components and power supplies too, it would be expected to sound better.
We know that isn't always true.
I have never tried a 763 so can't say ! :)
