I've been toying with the idea of buying a new SACD player for while and have recently been offered a Pioneer PD-D9MK2 SACD player for around £250. I believe this unit cost around £750 new.

Has anyone had any experience of this player? I'm on a limited budget and it seems like a good price if it's in decent condition. I won't have a chance to audition it unfortunately for a few weeks.

I've read a few reviews and they are favourable but i'm worried it may sound a little bright.

My current amp and speakers are:-

    Rotel RA-1520
    Monitor Audio Bronze 2

    Cheers

Here is the current range of Pioneer CD/SACD Players. These are about the lowest cost CD/SACD Player you can find -

    Pioneer PD10 CD/SACD Player - Superfi

    Pioneer PD30 CD/SACD Player - Superfi

Pioneer PD50 CD/SACD Player with DAC - Superfi

From here, the price jumps considerably -

    Marantz SA8005 CD/SACD Player - Superfi

There is one better Pioneer CD Player the PD-70, but it is extremely hard to find, though you can find them on Ebay or buy directly from Japan.

Here is a TechRadar review from 2009 of the Pioneer PD-D9MK2 Player -

    Pioneer PD-D9 Mk2 review

Here is a link to Pioneer with the specs for that player -

    PD-D9MK2-K - SACD/CD Player for Critical Listening

The TechRadar review doesn't mention price that I can find, but the Pioneer Website indicated the original Retail Price was about US$1500. That makes this a pretty good player, assuming it is still in good shape.

    Thanks BlueWizard, much appreciated.

I've been away for a few days but have since had a chance to audition it and it sounds excellent and it's in great condition so i'm going to go ahead with the purchase.

Rude not to at that price!

    Cheers,

    Mark.

For reference US$1500 is about £1145. (at current exchange rates)

So, assuming everything is working properly, £250 is a bargain.

The TechRadar review is from 2009, so that gives you some idea of the age of the Player.

On the other hand, the NEW Pioneer PD30 CD/SACD is £199 (£350 retail), and the considerably better NEW Pioneer PD50 CD/SACD is £369 (£499 retail).

You weight the cost, warranty, and support of New vs the value of Old. But, ultimately, that is your decision to make.
