SACD, DVD-Audio & Blu Ray-Audio Discussion Thread

Maybe the thread title could be amended to include Blu Ray Audio. I have a few myself and love the format. I wish I could get more of my favourite albums this way.

It's a good idea and will include BR audio. Perhaps SACD, DVD-A & HFPA Discussion Thread?

The thread starter will have the final say but I can edit the thread title if there's a consensus.

Or maybe 'SACD, DVD-A & BRD-A Discussion Thread'

@Tetlee

That'd be good. BD-As have been mentioned on this thread previously - as have DTS-CDs and plain old audio-only DVD-Vs - so it might make sense to include Blu-ray. Primarily, we have generally stuck to hi-res - and amazing to think that this thread has been going a decade! Good on you Tetlee!

@Tetlee

I think Blu Ray Audio would be better than HFPA. I googled HFPA and came up with this.

The thread title has now been changed to reflect the newer format of Blu Ray-Audio.

SACD, DVD-Audio & Blu Ray-Audio Discussion Thread.

I've got the XTC Blu Ray Audio of Drums And Wires on at the moment on PCM 5.1. A brilliant album which I'm still adjusting to in this remix. I watched the two videos first. Unfortunately the sound was out of sync but I couldn't be bothered to correct it. The good news is that the audio only tracks don't suffer the same issue.

Thanks, JUS. .............and for the Clapton & BB King DVD-A recommendation. I will have a look-around and see if I can find it anywhere. As mentioned in my last post, I have been fairly quiet buying DVD-As and SACDs over the past couple of years. This isn't down to me losing interest - it's purely a slightly difficult time for me.

Anyway, it is quite easy for me to recommend some classical titles from my list. I can't say that I'm particularly knowledgable with this genre, and have tried to broaden my discs beyond what I call the popular classics that most people know. I still struggle with that, though, although I think I've got some unusual/rarely seen music. Anyway, here's a few below. I'm sure that these exist as equally nice recordings on SACD - so you might like to look at the website HR.net and its predecessor sa-cd.net. Let me know if you've any other questions.

Bach / Brandenburg Concertos - Silverline DVD-A
Beethoven / Symphony 6 – Teldec DVD-A
Dvořak / Symphony No. 9 & The Water Goblin - Teldec DVD-A

I could also add the following:-

Holst / The Planets & The Mystic Trumpeter - Naxos DVD-A
Mozart / Clarinet Concerto & Clarinet Quintet - PentaTone SACD
Mozart / Horn Concertos - PentaTone SACD
Tchaikovsky / Swan Lake - Naxos DVD-A

Not being sure how familiar you might be with various composers, but I generally find Mozart quite easy to listen to. Wagner is often very powerful, and could be considered perhaps as the Led Zeppelin of the classical music world! Mussorgsky can be very dark at times.

One - for me at least - interesting piece of music that is very hard to find on any optical format, is on my SACD by Water Lily Acoustics - with pieces by Liszt and Dvorak. The piece in question is Les Preludes by Liszt, and I've only ever seen it as a CD on the Naxos labels - or the SACD which I have. Unfortunately, in my opinion, this SACD offers only a stereo mix - and I am a fan of discs offering at least both multi-channel and stereo options. Les Preludes is a piece brought to my attention by my late father many years ago. For me, this piece is quite Wagnerian in its energy and power, and has a wonderful recurring "riff" in it, which was used in the 1930s (I assume 40s also) by the Nazi Party, as musical introduction apparently to their news broadcasts. My father used to listen to these broadcasts when he was young (with almost certain disapproval of his parents) - hence him making me aware of it.

Another very dark piece which I was previously unaware of is on my Mussorgsky DVD-A. Apart from it having Pictures at an Exhibition and Night on a Bare Mountain on it, it has also a particularly dark piece that I like called Entr'acte to Act IV of Khovanschchina - track 2 on the disc.

Strange that it is not referred to as a DVD Audio (or DVD-A), merely DVD (audio only). That just makes me suspicious. Perhaps I'm just being overly cautious.

New pre-order DVD audio alert! :)

Ultravox - Vienna Boxset

Contains 24/96 5.1 mixes and 24/96 stereo mixes!

I love Ultravox so can't wait for this one! (hope they give their other albums the same treatment)
It's too much money!

Why can't you buy a 'digital' boxed set without the analogue 12" vinyl discs? It would make it much more affordable at around £28.00 and something I'd go for!

Yes, I agree that there's too much in it. It doesn't seem to suggest that 12" LPs are included though, unless I'm overlooking the obvious. I which case, apologies. If it did contain vinyl LPs, I'd definately reject it, as I was pleased to see the back of my vinyl collection 20 years ago, and have no regrets. Why this release is packed in a 12" cardboard slipcase though, heaven knows. Or am I just being terribly ungrateful?!

@ epicdream. It's really very gallant of you to be a guinea pig. I'd be very interested to hear any feedback. I really didn't expect any more DVD-As to be released, so am very sceptical. You're a hero!

Indeed:

Vienna album – Steven Wilson Mix *
• 96/24 5.1 Surround Sound Mix
• DTS 96/24 5.1 Surround Mix
• DOLBY AC3 5.1 Surround Mix
• 9624 LPCM Stereo Mix

These specifications imply a DVD to me, not a DVD-A as there is no mention of MLP, even though 96/24 is mentioned.

I hadn't noticed the inclusion of vinyl when I first looked at the link. I'm the same as you. No interest in paying for vinyl. I suppose you could try to sell the vinyl on...

A 6 channel 96/24 LPCM audio stream would have a constant bit-rate of 13'824Kbps (13.823Mbps), which exceeds the DVD-V specifications total (1x disc) read speed of 10.500Mbps. Which is not permissible!

The only way to get 6 channel 96/24 LPCM audio streams onto a DVD disc is to use MLP lossless packing and utilise the DVD-A specification.

Cheers

Arriving almost three months after ordering/despatch, is the latest addition to my hi-res music list, an SACD from the group Camel. The album is "The Snow Goose".

Here's a link to HRAudio.net showing the album:-

I often think I'm reasonably knowledgeable with regard to music and groups, but oddly I'd never heard of Camel before. My wife ordered this for me from CD Japan for my recent birthday.

I've only listened to the album once so far, but it certainly sounds very interesting music and I definately like it. Only negatives are that the music is presented in 2-channel only - and it's on a non-hybrid SACD. I generally prefer listening in multi-channel, and particularly like it when discs offer at least a choice of audio options. Not really big negatives though.

How is the Doors Soft Parade?
Joe

I'm very pleased with all the Doors albums that are in the DVD-A "Perception" box set, and have no regrets that I bought the entire set, rather than individual albums - which initially I thought might be better for me. To answer your question more precisely though, I find "Soft Parade" the weakest of all the albums in that set, but purely from a musical/artistic sense. I have no criticisms whatsoever from an audio point of view, regardless of whether we're talking audio quaility, or the multi-channel mixes or stereo mixes. I have not bothered to listen to any of the CDs in the set.

In short, I have never heard any of the Doors music on a format that I thought was better than these DVD-As.

I recently bought the REM Monster 25th Anniversary boxset and I must say I prefer the older dvd-a (2 channel and multichannel versions). Not a fan of this recent hi-res remaster. Anyone else tried it?
