My set-up: Arcam AVR280, Arcam DV137, 5.1 Muso/Logo speakers/sub.

I've edited in my list now .

Have looked at The Crystal Method - Legion of Boom DVD-A a few times, must be one of the few high-res dance music releases around, any good? Don't really know anything about them.

Yeah, I think so. It's a 48/24 release but sounds good and makes good use of the surround effects.

I got into them through the film "The Replacement Killers" which features "Keep Hope Alive" off the "Vegas" album during the opening scenes in the night club. There's a fair amount of their stuff on Youtube, amongst other sources if you want to have a listen before buying.

That's an impressive collection, quite a few rarities, Talk Talk being one, and is that the entire Depeche Mode catalogue you have there?

Put GA: Goodbye Country on back order earlier on(doubt it'll come through but worth a try) and should be ordering Ziggy Stardust in the next few days all being well, looking forward to that one.

:D Thank you. The Mrs has seen how much I got for GA: Lovebox and she wants me to sell them all now

I only bought Talk Talk as it was one of the first and at the time only SACD's on release. Although it's only stereo it sounds wonderful. Same with Metallica (5.1 dvd-a) I really didn't like them (and haven't liked any album after!) but it's an incredible production and I love the album now.

DM - No, not a full collection...I've missed 2 recent albums I really didn't like...and funny enough I can still get quite cheaply. The ones I've marked I would really recommend even if you don't like DM.

GA: Goodbye Country is one of my favs...I hope you get it. Knowing how good it is I think If I didn't have it I'd be daft enough to pay insane money.

A lot of the David Bowie Albums are stereo. Ziggy Stardust is 5.1 and sounds really great...again well worth insane money.

Really should get a few of the Depeche Mode albums, my missus likes them too which helps, although she isn't so keen on Playing the Angel, I prefer their older stuff also I think, will check out the ones you recommended first:thumbsup:, although I think Violator is very hard to find at a reasonable price.

You could probably get well over £100 for The Colour of Spring on the bay:eek: thankfully the redbook release of that album sounds great so I don't feel I'm missing too much there.

I've just ordered the SACD/DVD release of Music for the Masses from HMV.

Violator went for £40 on fleabay recently - I got outbid :(. There is a vanilla CD/DVD release of Violator, but I don't know what the resolution of the DTS track on the DVD is. If it is 96/24, like the Genesis box sets, then that's as good as SACD. Does anybody know?

True, but I am surprised Steve W hasn't been by this thread to share his collection.

I've seen Violator and Black Celebration go for a lot more than that. These are great and I'd recommend paying that. 2 x discs. One with CD & SACD the other with 5.1 and interviews with all of the band members at the time the album was made. Quality stuff.

I've checked the Mute website to see what they say. I looked up Music for the Masses and it doesn't mention a non SACD version , I look up Black Celebration and it has no mention of SACD  Not sure if it helps but I can check my DVD to see what resolution is on that later but I was very pleased with those mixes when I first listened to them (not realising the SACD was on the other disc  ).

Good price, going to copy you as soon as the missus wakes up so I can sneak in a grab my credit card:D

As an aside, notice it has a track named Agent Orange on that album;)

It is a good price yes, half that of Amazon. I love find-cd.co.uk :D.

I had indeed, made me chuckle :).

I know, they're just like the Genesis discs, which are great, but when I paid £55 for Genesis 83-88, the idea of paying £40 for one album smarts rather!!

The Mute web site is not overly helpful on the technical details. If you could check your DVDs to see whether the tracks are DTS 96/24, that would be great. If they are not, then it is unlikely that the CD/DVD box set will be either.

Here's my list. Jean Michel Jarre's Aero album is what started all this nonsense, and bought my first DVD-As in early-ish 2005 - first ones being Tubular Bells 2003, Vivaldi Four Seasons and Tchaikovsky 1812. Latest album bought was just about a month ago, which was the Gerry Rafferty DVD-A. There are still many SACDs Id like and will buy, and Im quite surprised to keep finding more DVD-As to buy - when I think the choice is running out! Most I've paid for a disc is about £35, which was the Deep Purple DVD-A, and the least I've paid is one of the Naxos DVD-As at £2.44!

If anyone would like my thoughts on any of these, just ask. I'll happily pass on my experiences - there are some really amazing albums here, and luckily only a few somewhat duller albums.

Thanks for taking the time to list your collection. Nice.

However, I would like to hear your views of the Brubeck SACD.

Very interested in this title, but somewhat concerned about SQ because of age of recording.

I also have this, in fact mine is the DSD only version, although that probably makes no difference. Put simply, it sounds amazing. I use it to show off the format and my kit to friends and they are always blown away by how it sounds.

I agree totally with Mr.Orange. As also mentioned, this is a non-hybrid SACD, which means that there is not a CD layer, and a dedicated SACD or universal disc player will be required.

I understand your thoughts Iain, regarding concerns with the audio quality from such an old recording. I'm not an audio expert, just using my ears to judge things. In my experience, though, there are a lot of reasonably old recordings out there that can put very new recordings in the shade. Sure, possibly we all hear things differently, but many of my "old" recording hi-res albums really stand out.

These hi-res formats have really changed the way I listen to music, and helped me to appreciate music that I didn't originally think I liked.

Hi Steve,

Could you please give your "The Doors" DVD-A a listen from your Perception box set and let me know what you think of the surround sounds? Mine sounds like it's 3.1 rather than 5.1.

Which of the classical discs would you recommend?

Regards

Jus

Hello Jus,

Yeah, I'll gladly give my "The Doors" a listen to again. If you'll bear with me until perhaps the weekend, as I'm away until Friday evening. From memory though, which I know is not always terribly reliable, it wouldn't surprise me if you think it might sound like 3.1, rather than 5.1. If I remember correctly, the earlier albums are very delicately (generally referred as ambient) mixed in MCH, whereas the later ones are slightly more aggresively mixed - although not particularly aggresively. As I said though, I'll gladly give the disc another listen to. I don't know if it's of any interest to you or anyone else, but on first listenings, I decided that I preferred the stereo mixes over the MCH. Of course, this could have been prejudice, wanting the sounds to "match" my expectations of when I listened used to them on vinyl etc. - who knows? I'm warming to the MCH mixes though.

Regarding the orchestral/classical discs, there are a number that really do stand out. Very interestingly enough - as mentioned earlier - some are old recordings, and some are relatively new from the last decade. Bear with me, and I'll see if I can give you an update on these before the weekend, perhaps I'll manage it from the office when I'm at work. I'm not very knowledgable with this kind of music, but I generally know what I like. Are you able to give me a very rough idea of your general tastes?

Great, look forward to your feedback. I listened to a few of the albums and I could hear it was 5.1 throught the albums...I had to put my ear as close to my surrounds as I could when listening to "The Doors" and couldn't really hear anything!

I'm more of a pop, rock, metal, house etc etc fan... but I like to expand my horizons. I'd prefer it to be engaging rather than background...preferably with some sort of vocals.

I already have The planets, four seasons, Figaro

Not a problem here as Pioneer 610 is universal disc player, but it might be a problem for others who aren't so equipped.

"Time Out" is a Sony non-hybrid early release, right?

My experience exactly.

BTW, I've only been collecting a relatively short time, but here's my list:

DVD-Audio

  • Beethoven - Piano Concertos 3, 4 and 5 - Scottish Chamber Orchestra/Artur Pizarro - Linn *

  • Arne Nordheim - 1956 String Quartet - The Engegård Quartet - 2L *

  • Dave Matthews - Some Devil **

  • Leo Kottke - 6 and 12 String Guitar - Takoma **

  • Sibelius - Tone Poems - Sir Colin Davis/LSO - Red Seal **

  • Sibelius - Tone Poems - Sir Andrew Davis/RSPO - Apex **

SACD

  • Rosa Passos/Ron Carter - Entre Amigos - Chesky

  • Beethoven - Symphonies 1-9 - Haitink/LSO - LSO Live

  • Ravel/Debussy - String Quartets - Parkanyi Quartet - Praga Digitals

  • The Bohemian Album - Amsterdam Sinfonietta - Channel Classics

  • Days of Future Passed - Moody Blues - Deram

* 192/24 FLAC OEM Download
** 2-Channel to Multi-Channel Hi-Res Upconversion

Nordheim string quartet is part of a recording that also includes Beethoven and Dvorak pieces to be released later this month by 2L in SACD as well as FLAC format. That piece is phenomenal in that both SQ and performance are excellent. I can only conclude other pieces are as well.
