SACD, DVD-Audio & Blu Ray-Audio Discussion Pt.2

I finally managed to start listening to my new Animals BD-A early this morning, and I'm slowly getting into it. I've had the CD (EMI CDEMD 1060) of this album for a few years now, but I was never really impressed by it; it sounded dull and flat.

I didn't manage to get too far into the album before waking my wife with the music (!), but the dts-HD MA MCH-mix is very impressive. The disc seems to be slightly hard work on my Cambridge CXU, as it appears to default to LPCM stereo after loading, meaning (it seems) that I need to put on the TV to find the dts-HD MA options.

For those interested, the BD-A actually has 6 audio options, not only the 3 that are mentioned on the liner notes, and elsewhere online. In addition to the dts-HD MA 2018 5.1 24bit/96kHz Surround Mix, the 201

In addition to the dts-HD MA 2018 5.1 24bit/96kHz Surround Mix, the dts-HD MA 2018 24bit/192kHz Stereo Mix and the dts-HD MA original 1977 24bit/192kHz options, there are corresponding LPCM versions labelled as "Uncompressed Audio" at the same specifications as the dts-HD MA selection.

Yep... I backed-up my Blu-ray disc yesterday.

As a test, I even extracted to 'lossy' 96/24 DTS audio stream from the DTS-HD MA audio stream, and it sounds really good ;)

I've suggested this before to others, but to avoid having to turn the TV on to select options, just not a note down on a sheet of paper to list what button presses you have to press to get it to the version you want so that next time you can just look at your crib sheet for the disc you're playing and follow the steps 'blind' without the TV in. Sorted, and easy to do.

Thanks. That's something I'll investigate and probably do. I can jot the sequence of button/cursor movements on a Post-It note and stick it within the Jewel Box.

That is one thing though that I've preferred with DVD-As and SACDs, where I simply put the disc in the player and go.

This is why I back-up my discs to audio streams and transfer them to my NAS.

With the Animals disc I re-encoded the multi-channel track and two stereo LPCM tracks to FLAC and use the Android app for my OPPO to navigate to them ;)

23 minutes documentary about the making of Saturday Night in San Francisco, Vinyl and SACD, Impex Records

The Eric Clapton Unplugged Mofi SACD appears to be low UK stock* can only locate 2 UK stockists (eBay sellers). Likely 44.1 kHz upscale to DSD given this was a 90s MTV performance. If Mofi-gate has not put you off there is also the even more spendy Vinyl ☺️

Decca are releasing a new 24 bit 192 kHz tape transfer of the George Solti Richard Wagner Ring Cycle on Atmos, Vinyl and SACD. Getting all the staggered releases will come to mega spendy 😧😅 There is 'meant to be' a complete edition set in Spring 2023 if that matters for the shelf

Both Blu Ray Audio and SACD arrived Today.
SACD cost a small fortune what with shipping and Duties , but it had to happen to complete the SACD sets.
The SACD wins hands down in terms of packaging , lovely hard back book in a box sleeve with lots of Promo shots on really thick paper.
The Blu Ray is positively trashy in comparison , cheap cardboard sleeve and really thin leaflet type booklet.

There is no sign in either pack of the "contentious liner notes" that all the trouble/hold up was about !
Looks like maybe they were scrapped in order to keep some kind of peace maybe ?

That's interesting. I've not heard of this group. I shall have to investigate. Where do you normally/often order from?

The only Polish band/group I know is Kroke - the one that Nigel Kennedy has played with.

Burning Shed UK is my usual stop for things like this.

I've pre-ordered the blu-ray version of Optical Delusion by Orbital which will be released on 17 February 2023. The pre-order window will close on 4 November.

The track 'Dirty Rat' is a collaboration with the Sleaford Mods, according to the link. Reading up on them on Wikipedia reveals that the name comes from the small market town in Lincolnshire of the same name. That, and Grantham, were my old stomping grounds as a youngster. I never thought I would see the name 'Sleaford' in a band name!! :D

Steely Dan getting SACD re-releases via Analogue Productions (was previously Japan SHM-SACD releases)

Joni Mitchell coming to SACD via Mofi

I recently added the 2CD + 2 Bluray set of John Williams' Berlin Concert to my collection.

This is the first hi-res audio that I have bought in forever!

Another Analogue Productions disc from Jethro Tull. The classic Aqualung as well as Benefit are being produced on hybrid stereo discs.

I've got the SHM release of Pretzel Logic, it is really rather good and pretty easy to get hold of. If the others are going to be as good then 2023 is going to be an expensive year what with Joni Mitchell and Jethro Tull having releases.

Thanks for that. Out of all the music I own, Jethro Tull only appears on one compilation disc - and that's only one track! Didn't Steve Wilson do Aqualung on BD with multi-channel mix, or was that only available as a box set containing multiple formats?

Thankfully, I still haven't lost the interest in discovering new music, and one of my latest SACDs from Dutton Vocalion is quite enjoyable. It's the Azteca "Azteca & Pyramid of the Moon double disc album.

This release covers two of their albums, one with stereo and MCH-audio mix, the other with only a stereo mix. This music completely passed me by in the early 70s when it was originally released, no doubt down to the fact that I wasn't quite earning money - and my older brother was more into ELP, Yes, Deep Purple etc.

I'm not too sure about BD but there is a DVD-V boxset for the 40th anniversary. SW has done several of the Tulls albums and all are very good. Perhaps the best is Songs from the Wood.

I've got the SW anniversary releases of "A" and "Stormwatch" and they are very good indeed. The one I really want from him is "Broadsword and the Beast". I absolutely love that album.

The SDE have announced, Concert for George as the next release in their line of exclusives.

A bit pricey but tempting.

Yeah, that is a bit pricey. I could be tempted with the BD with its multi-channel option, but the CDs hold no interest for me - even more so that I have the, albeit stereo-only, DVD-A of this album.
