S550 Mix and Direct...

Hi

I've been searching a bit, and while the S550 owners thread mentions the direct and mix settings quite a few times, I haven't really gotten an answer to what it actually does, so this is what I ask now.

Does it have anything to do with choosing to output HD audio as bitstream or decoded LPCM?

In the manual it says that the "mix" setting will output 96 and 192 kHz audio as 48 kHz. Does that mean that it will only output LCPM as 48 kHz, or does it only mean that it will output 48 kHz when viewing e.g. a directors commentary with audio mixed into the original soundtrack?

Hi AndyKH. :)
If you want bitstream or "full" decoding of HD audio then set to Direct. :smashin:
Use Mix for Secondary audio,i think (?) the TrueHD track can be used but not DTS-MA.
EDIT: From the manual > Set to Mix and then DTS-HD signals are output as DTS 5.1 only.
All the best.

Thanks!

But how do I then set if I want the player or the receiver to decode HD audio?

Effectively, for both options the receiver will be doing the decoding - assuming you're using HDMI, etc. Direct means that it's passing the audio channel 'raw', whereas Mix means it's merging in other content (such as a commentary), so it downmixes some of the HD formats. So, it's effecting the format that's being passed to the receiver to be decoded.

To get the player to do the decoding, you'd use the multi-channel outputs into the receiver, which would then just be passing the decoded audio to the speakers as directed by the player.
