hello. i've just purchased a yamaha dsp ax620 amp which has (i think) 2 optical digital imputs.
one i am going to connect my dvd to and i was wondering if i can connect my echostar to the other one this way, so i can get dts and dol 5.1 from any of the foreign channels.
the receivers spec says it has this s/pdif(sony philipps digital interface) whatever that is,for digital audio.

is this what i think it is and what connecter do i need?

    can anybody help?

The echostar has a coaxial digital output so you will need a coaxial to optical convertor which is about £60 from lektropacks.
You will need a 75 ohm coaxial cable from your echostar to the convertor, then you need an optical cable from the convertor to your amp.

You will only get dolby digital from some channels. I have not seen any broadcasting in dts although I have not looked for a while. There are only a couple broadcasting the digital signal so from the rest you will only get dolby surround or mono.

Make sure you have the latest version of the software as the older versions did not have the option for dolby digital.

thanks for your reply. I've checked the amp and found that it has one coaxial input. I guess I can connect to this without the converter ?

Can I assume that the s/pdif socket on my echostar is another name for a coaxial jack socket?

You can also get convertors for £20 from maplins.

My Humax can do Dolby digital, but needed a software upgrade for that.

Very few chanels are in DD, and then not in English, but the quality of ordinary stereo (optical output on the Humax), is good enough for me.

I got an optical switcher from beyondhifi because I got the sat, mini disc, DVD, computer, and CD player all with optical outputs, and I am Mr Gadget.

Is it really worth it ?
How much is the cable setting you back ?
The only channels I've seen transmitting in DD are the german premier movie channels and I think it's only 2 of them !

They are probably transmitted in German - good if you understand German.:p
