Just got this disc [R2] and despite the news that it would be devoid of a DTS mix I was so looking forward to some quality rock on DVD ... Well the good news is that there is nearly 3 hours of classic Rush with some of their newer material [which I am not so keen on] ... The bad news is that the DD5.1 mix is poor IMO - too much crowd noise & poor separation of the instruments ... Fortunately the DD2.0 mix is pretty good but to say I was hugely disappointed would be an understatement ... The 2 disc package is pretty good with a 50min docu & some multi angle tracks on disc 2 ... Glad I only paid 11 quid for it ... Paul ;)

While I do like this dvd, It could have been so much better:
The crowd is loud, but I think that was one of the biggest audiences Rush have ever played to.
The sound does actually improve a few tracks in - They weren't able to do a soundcheck in this instance - a bit of a problem!
Lack of dts didn't bother me, but it would have been nice to have one uncompressed audio track (PCM instread of DD2.0).
Also, is the R2 anamorphic? The R1 isn't.
Shame they have no plans to come to Europe any time soon :(
Have to make do with the dvd then...

Neither region is anamorphic, the decision was made due to the type of camera used behind Neil apparently.
Agree the sound could have been so much better but what the hell it still rocks :D
Bonus Vintage footage of Anthem on disc 2 if your not aware is accessed by pressing at the menu screen.
2 enter wait until the picture loads immediately press return.
Back at the index screen press.
1 enter wait until picture loads etc.
    1 enter etc.
    2 enter etc.
    ;) 2112.
For the By-Tor movie wait until Alex mentions it in the documentary then press enter :)

Still waiting for mine from DVD Popcorn.

Just a suggestion, but with the 5.1 mix, if you turn down the rear speakers, does that reduce the crowd noise? I have to agree, it's annoying, and the CD version is just as bad.

Thanks for the heads up on the hidden extras!

re turning down the rears unfortunately it wont work like that in this case as they (Alex) have deliberately turned up the crowd noise at certain points to emphasise how enthusiatic the crowd were (how I wish I'd been with them :( ) so if you turn down the rears you'll miss some quite nice mixing elsewhere on songs.
I think its a case of live with the 5.1 as is or go the stereo route which does sound nice...Just turn the bugger up

Well I have watched this DVD all the way through again today & I'm still less than impressed - what a missed opportunity - they obviously tried to give you the impression you were in the crowd watching live - well that's a great feeling when you are at a show & no one gives a flying whatever what the sound quality is like when you cant even hear the person next to you! - but when I watch a DVD of a concert I like to hear the best possible audio quality possible (like Roger Waters or The Eagles) - It is also why I have all this expensive equipment (!) Look at the Led Zep DVD to see what is possible even with ancient poor quality source tapes etc - Most of my concert DVDS sound better than the Rush one ... Paul ;)

I've been saving this disk for a while waiting for the right moment, and I've finally put it on tonight - but I'm really let down by the audio quality.

I can hardly make out the vocals, both in 5.1 and 2.0 modes. I've noticed that in 5.1 there is hardly anything coming out of the centre channel. I've been checking my setup but can't find anything wrong, so I must presume it is the way it has been recorded.

Have to agree with Paulboy's comments - when you listen to the quality of some concerts recorded many years ago, this disk just seems miles behind. I watched 'Stop Making Sense' the other night and it knock spots of this.

    Shame :(

When i veiwed this disc i felt really weird, the interviews and stuff were strange to watch. I've been a fan of Rush since Hemispheres in '77 seen them 12 times live (I even have the logo from the first album tattooed on my arm) - but i'd never heard them speak at length about anything - never really seen an interview with them. Just weird to watch my boyhood heroes talk!

Also have to say that my heart goes out to Neil Peart for all hes been through - it must have been a rough year.

Just to update Nikes comment from 29/11 -
"Shame they have no plans to come to Europe any time soon ".
    check out www.rush.com
A 30th anniversary tour is planned for this year which will include Europe!

    Cheers

Mark (a massive Rush fan who got sick of waiting for UK dates and went to see them in Las Vegas instead!)

Heh it's always nice to spread good news about Rush!

Back to the title of this thread - I thought the sound quality was OK and struck a good balance between the stage and crowd to give more of the feeling of what it was like to be there. For me it certainly brought back memories of the show I saw in Vegas, and it made me smile for hours!

    Cheers.

I haven't got a problem with sound of the crowd - I think it's appropriate to have it mixed in - from the little bit of the booklet that I read I think Geddy Lee said something about their energy being an integral part of the performance.

But I did think that his vocals sounded muffled and swamped out by the rest of the sound.

I also had to turn the volume down to about a third of it's usual level - it appears to have been recorded very 'loud' if you know what I mean. Anyone else noticed this ?

I think the CD is not the best sound either. The drums in particular, sound weak and tinny. I thought the previous 'Different Stages' triple CD set sounded much better, and it's a shame they couldn't have put that out on DVD, especially for the complete version of 2112!

    agree

I must say that I have all the VHS versions of previous live performances and my favorite is still "Exit Stage Left"from 81 which is a shame in some respects looking at how old the tape is now and how good it still sounds
That being said "Live in Rio" is still a great DVD, agreed the sound isn't as pleasing as we would all have hoped for and the non anamorphic picture isn't what was promissed either
However that being said Rush is about and always has been about musicianship, there isn't realistically musically or artistically a group who can touch em and I'll fight anyone who says there is :zonked:

I don't remember the Exit Stage Left video, but I have the CD. Unfortunately, that too suffered in the sound department -- it was quite 'muddy'. I actually think A Show Of Hands is also a great live album, although may fans dislike it because of the lack of older material. However, if you get the CD and the Video and mix the alternative tracks together, you can make up a bloody good double CD from which is, in my opinion, a greater era of Rush than the last few albums, Vapor Trails excepted.

I used to have A Show of Hands on VHS and CD and loved it to bits - especially the drum solo, but that was years ago before I got into home cinema, so I couldn't comment on how the sound compares to Rio.

The thing is, I keep noticing Show of Hands on DVD advertised on ebay. Are these geniune releases or has someone copied a VHS on DVD ? They are advertised as DD5.1. Check it out.

They are Brazilian, and are merely copies of the VHS version, but not 'bootlegs' as such. Exit Stage Left is also about. I think the 5.1 surround is some sort of pseudo surround. There are quite a few of these for different bands, available from DVD Brazil and although it appears tempting, they are not official releases, and should not be treated as such. My advice would be to avoid, and wait for the real thing to come out.

    Alex Lifeson
This is Alex Zivojinovich, a.k.a. Alex Lifeson, a.k.a. the lead guitarist for the rock band Rush, busted on New Year’s Eve by Naples, Florida police on a variety of charges, including drunk and disorderly and aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer. Hard to believe that could happen on New Year’s Eve. According to police, the scuffle began when Zivojinovich refused to leave the stage after singing in a New Year’s celebration. Police say Zivojinovich pushed a deputy down the stairs and spat blood in another deputy’s face. Zivojinovich’s son, who was also arrested, said the deputy tumbled down the stairs after she pushed his father.

Rock and Roll don't ya just love it :D

The dark stuff on his shirt is real blood as opposed to fake blood I guess ;)

Poor old Alex. I'll be so ****** off if after waiting all these years he ends up sewing mail bags in Florida. That's an awful picture of him, even when drunk!
