My 9yo son has been given a pentium III machine running xp and wants to play games. I have some old DOS games (The ones where you ran a boot disk and the game ran in DOS). Can he play them or not?

Just double click the game file and it should load automatically in command prompt, thats how i do it. I am not that technical with the advanced ways of dos so if it does not work i will ask a friend.

If you know dos then you can prob use command prompt.

    Its in start>all programs>accessories>command prompt

Some will work, some probably won't as Win XP basically has to emulate a DOS environment. :)

There's a very good dos emulator for Windows XP called DOSbox. It can run some old games but not all. Get it here:

    http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1

There's also a link to which games will and won't work on it on this page as well. I used to use it to run sensible soccer (the PC version) but I've forgotten how to configure it, so you'll have to have a tinker with it. There's a good forum if you get stuck.

If you want to run old adventure games on your XP machine (like the Lucasart ones) there's Scummvm:

    http://www.scummvm.org/

Easier to use then DOSbox but only runs adventure games.

Sometimes you may need to run XP in compatability mode. Right click on the exe file, go to properties and select compatability mode. Then select Windows 95 or 98. THat helps. Also running the app in seperate memory space, again in properties.
