Hi, I recently used imovie for putting photo's on and adding transitions, it looked fine when I previewed it on imovie, (the photo's are very high quality)
when Inserted a blank dvd and used idvd to burn the photo's on the disc then played it on a standard dvd player, on a 40" HDTV: IT LOOKED ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE! have I done something wrong is there any way to improve the quality??!! :lease:

PAL DVD is 576 lines IIRC, no way to avoid that. A DVD is not a good way to display photos.

loads of ways, your TV maybe have a USB port or memory card reader and play jpegs straight from that. Your DVD maybe be able output jpegs through HDMI. Or you could get a media player of some type, like a WDTV box or even just a really cheap one.
