Hi looking for some help with the above, t the moment running both the above from a cupboard in the attic, the router is connected to the first slave phone point with the only phone connected to a 2nd slave point, so nothing is connected to the master phone point.
Is this okay as i read that the internet should be on the master
Thanks
Robert

You can connect the modem (router) to any phone socket, the only reason you'd need to connect it to the master socket is if you've got certain types of ADSL filter built into the master socket (or replacing the face plate if you've got a new style one). If you're using plug-in microfilters then any phone socket will do.

The other reason for using the Master Socket of course is that the ADSL signal won't be subjected to the electronic 'dirtyness' of a domestic dwelling which can affect its speed.

The rule of thumb is to always use the Master Socket for the router and then connect any remote devices via Ethernet over Cat5 cable, which will cope with EMI better.

To find out whether it will make any difference in your case, check the Line Speed in the Extensions, then in the Master Socket and then in the Test Socket. If they are all the same you can continue to use the extension.

Surely that depends on what things are near the master socket? It can definitely be affected by things like the bell wire problem.

Nope. Its the cable runs that pick up induced noise. (They can act like antennae.) The ring circuit is a similar issue but, in its case, it is far more likely to be a problem because it is 'unbalanced'.

yep - I found that the master socket to have almost a 2mb increase in speed on a 24mb service over one of the slave sockets, on a new build house. Fitted a filtered faceplate to get the most from in the end.
