ROTK trailer online this Monday on TheOneRing.net!
It will be shown first though in most cinemas worldwide
AOL version is here. Spoilers!
You'll need Quicktime, this is a small, low res one (but loads better than the ripped-from-tv ones floating about), the full screen versions should be available later today when the Americans drag themselves outta bed.
Damn I'm excited!
Bowel emptyingly good, but the buggers should not have shown Shelob.
Apart from that, I'm gobsmacked.
!!!POSSIBLE SPOLERS FOR RoTK and The Hobbit - Highlight to Read
There is a theory going around that that isn't Shelob (as it seems far too small) - maybe one of her brood. This would be a change from the book as she lived alone but we know that her spawn are the "smaller" spiders who attack Bilbo et al in The Hobbit. But would mean that Shelob herself is still kept a suprise for the film itself. /shrug
There is now a higher res version here but unsuprisingly it is darn slow heh. New Line's full screen version should be up in an hour or two I would guess.
Its on lotr.net now
Full screen is a 26.4m sit file (mac), waiting for it downloading now.
Thanks for the other link (onering.net), looks superb.
Anyone going to the marathon extended screenings?
I'm glad they showed shelob, it aversion therapy for me as i dont like spiders, now i can force myself to look her so i dont run scream from the cinema when i do see her on a big screen!!!
Um, I have a lot of money on the fact they didn't ...
I downloaded the 25mb version - it took 2hrs and then didn't work!
Gonna try again now...
It's been confirmed that the theatrical cut of LOTR:ROTK will run for three and a half hours (give or take a minute). I can't wait!
Dont frighten me KRaGorn - what do you think it was a baby one? (i have to say that i thought it looked abit small (compered to the discription in the book) look man you really cant do this to me (i'm sweating already!!) when i was a kid (abt 5) my brother and sister forced me to watch films like them, empire of the ants and some very bad Dr Who episodes - since then big insect type things just put the willies up me like you would believe!! (i'd kill NOT to watch 8 legged freaks!!) Yes i know its irrational and i know i'm 37 but such things just make me want to run screaming.
dont tell me that wasn't shelob!!
Yours bricking it........
(i think i need help!!!!!!!)
Well if it isn't Shelob then they've made afundamental change that really does undermine the subtlety of the plot.
I've not had my nose put out of joint by any of the plot alterations done by Mr jackson so far. It is a adaptation not a verbatim recounting of the text.
However, the whole point of the Shelob narrative is to do with Sam dealing with a problem on his own. Him against this ancient spider with no one else to help out. It is about the evolution of the his charactor. After all, he is the real hero of the two hobbits.
Multiple spiders or a brood simply just turns it into an inplausible monster fest. I really do hope your wrong on this one........
This guy here has been anal enough to go through the films and books to do a side by side comparison.
One confusing bit in the trailer Spolier:
It looks like Arwen is lying dead on a bed, but then she pops up later in the trailer and she does not die in the books.
I thought Arwen wasn't in the book?
Arwen is in the book but not a lot, she is mentioned more in the Appendices.
The issue is that there's no way what we saw in the clip compares to Tolkien's description of Shelob ... if in doubt, look up the narrative describing what Sam sees when Shelob attacks Frodo .. and again, the description of how Sam tackles her later on.
The size of that creature in the clip is about 1/4 of what it should be to be a faithful rendition of Tolkien's vision ... to do so would be a gratuitious departure so the hope is that this is one of her 'spawn', saving the 'real' Shelob's appearance for the film itself.
i told my wife (BIG BIG LOTR fan) she knows how i feel about movie spiders that it was about the size of a transit van - and she thought PJ must have gone mad!! "shelob's bigger than a transit van" she said "she bigger than a bus".
oh well just have empty my bowels BEFORE i go in!!
Re the trailer:
1) Just because Arwen is lying on a bed, doesn't mean she is dead. PJ has increased her roll in the films so can't see him doing that to her.
2) We have only seen the front of Shelob so maybe she has a really large butt! I have heard that they have made Shelob move very fast so thats why she could be smaller. I always pictured her as very large and slow moving though.
Q) Didn't Arwen give Frodo her life's grace in the FOTR?
Some guy has put together a composition of how big that spider we saw in the trailer will be if you could see it all against Frodo. If he is right then she is going to be one large spider and probably is Shelob a I think spawns of her would be a really bad idea.
Anyway take a look here
1) Check the trailer really, really carefully towards the end Also, remember the flash-forward in TTT to Aragorn's death and Arwen's ultimate fate as described by Tolkien in the main appendix to LoTR.
2) Yes, Arwen's been very promiscuous with her Grace, Aragorn got it in TTT.
Well there is the chance that the particular footage used in the trailer does not show the full size of the spider (if it is Shelob).
It may be a case of Frodo in foreground, spider in background.
It does occupy the whole size of the tunnel.
The other thing you have to remember is that Shelob depsite her size, is injured by crushing done on Sam while he points his sword upwards. If the spider is depicted as to big, then it could not suffer injury from such a situation.
Thus we can deduce that:
a.) Jackson hasn't made Shelob to big, thus maintaining credibility.
b.) Jackson has embellished the story and has multiple spiders, putting cinematic showboating ahead of plot evolution and thus ruined a narrative high point.
I sincerely hope not, as I think he has balanced adaptation and cinematic compromise exceptionally well upto now.
For those who were bothered the spider in the trailer is indeed Shelob, see here for confirmation (click Shelob).
But as has been pointed out the the true size is tricky to judge in that tunnel. We'll have to wait and see.
Do you mean the picture - I am not sure that is conclusive proof? Still seems surprising to me that they would show her in the trailer - or maybe they were trying to generate this kind of debate!
Doesn't 'She' look terrifying!
Can hardly wait for the movie.
Well looks like this page on the official film site proves that it is indeed Her in the trailer.
erm... seee three posts up /\
