I think that just like the previous movies, this will only truly shine once it gets the 4 disc treatment, with the movie split across 2 discs.

Just imho though, as I've not got ROTK on dvd yet;)

It just fails to reach reference quality in my opinion, but is certainly very good given the difficult material to encode, infact they have worked wonders with the encoding. Plenty of scenes have a real depth of field to them that shines through, especially on a very large screen like mine. It scored 9/10 in my review, very few compression artefacts and a nice sharpness to the image.

Just finished watching this on a Sony rear pro. Thought the image was outstanding!

IMHO the image is a little grainy and the detail is a little lacking when especially when you see the rohirim arrive on the crest of the hill at Pellanor, but then I have seen the HDTV version of TTT and the future is definately not DVD, infact I am starting to look at DVD's like I did VHS

Apologies for being slightly OT but is there any consensus on which is the best version of ROTK? R1, 2 or 3?

On my current setup the picture is outstanding on my projector.

I always thought Braveheart was a terrible transfer (macroblocks in skies etc) when I had my Samsung 807 DVD player, when I upgraded to a Sony 735 the picture was fine. The Samsung just wasn't very good at decoding video.

I thought the sound wasn't quite up to scratch. Particulsrly the dialogue. I found myself saying "whadde say?" far to many times for my liking. This is through my Denon AVC A1 and a Miller & Kreisel centre speaker, so not exactly bum kit. I point this out because at no other time, and with no other disc, have I had to do this...I watched a rental R2 version BTW. I'm waiting for the 4 discsre before I take the plunge...

Interesting you say that because I watched "The Core" R2 the other night and I was left with the same impression (again the only disc I have where it seems to happen). Have you got that one as a comparison?

Of course, the dialogue in The Core is not exactly vital to what is onscreen but there you go......
