Twilight Time have announced that they are to release Rollerball (1975) on May 13th.

This release will be in the US, mail order only, and almost certainly region locked.

Jim, you know there are several easy ways round this.

    1 - Buy a US player.
2 - Buy a UK player and update the firmware to one from the UK (you can do this on some models)
3 - Buy a BD drive for your computer. Download MakeMKV (it's free, and idiot-proof). Rip the disc and play it back on a media player - regional coding does not impact on this at all.

For 3 you can buy drives from £30:

Slimline USB External Blu ray drive. Reads and writes CDs & DVDs and plays Bluray disks / media. Slim and portable drive for laptop and desktop computers. Works with all PCs & laptops with a USB 2 port: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

    And media players from £25:

VonHaus by Designer Habitat Nano 3.0 Media Player- HD: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

I can't vouch for either of those. But if you're only ripping and playing back the odd disc, maybe a dozen a year, tops, I doubt there'd be any problem.

Or you could just wait until Arrow eventually release it. Which they most likely will do...

This is mainly true, but I believe they had to lock one of their releases to RA as part of the licencing for that specific title. Can't for the life of me remember which film it was though and, AFAIK, there's no reason to assume Rollerball will be region locked.

I do like this film, and I do have a RegA capable player, but I also find the prices of these too much really. I don't know how often I'd choose to put this on to warrant the money. I too hope Arrow release it, even a steely from them would be half the cost of the US import

Regarding the prices, I wouldn't buy a TT title casually at their prices, but I'm more than prepared to pay what amounts to c.£25 for a personal favourite.

You're talking to someone who very occasionally broke three figures back in the days of LaserDisc.

Yep! I cant be bothered with buying another machine. OK ill miss out on a couple Id really like for a while but sooner or later there will be a region B/region free one. And its not like I haven't got anything to watch - always have too much. I do laugh about reading people who buy new releases on day 1 and then don't actually watch them for six months if that!

A decent steelbook of this film would be in Arrow's best interests I think! And mine :D

If it's any consolation Jim, I emailed Arrow and specifically mentioned this title (listed amongst some others) because the rights are easily available and it suits their catalogue - they replied saying "Do love your list, lots there is being discussed already!"

So it's likely that it could include this film. Most of the people who follow their output would buy it I reckon, so financially it makes sense too. And they're getting more notorious cult films these days (Big Trouble In Little China, Time Bandits, Invasion Of The Body Snatchers, The Long Goodbye etc).

One of my favourite films too. Deffo want this ... and I doubt I'll be able to hold out for Arrow unless we get some sure-fire confirmation from them. It is certainly a title that they would release though, and with a much better overall package too.

And u can bet I'll be covering the film quite extensively either way! ;)

    "Jonathan jams it in!!!!!"

    GO HOUSTON!

    Cheers

This is one of those films, if I pay £25 to TT, then Arrow brings it out for £15, I'll buy that too, without a pause. No worries at all. And I agree, IF Arrow release it, they'll do a wonderful job.

But the TT release of Christine sold out in 24 hours and now goes for $100+ on e-bay. Arrow release not in evidence.

Much as I love the action sequences, the most extraordinary battles are between James Caan and John Houseman.

As with his small role in Three Days of the Condor, Houseman dominates every scene he's in. You feel Caan is all the stronger for not crumbling to his sheer presence than to the implied violent threats.

    Two very different alpha males.

One here too... I bought a couple in the sale recently but I always wondered which title would make me topple over and preorder.

Aye. So many people saying they'd never spend $35 on a Blu-ray Disc.

I can understand not being prepared to pay this for every disc, but if you won't do it for one of your favourites, what are you doing spending your time discussing films at Blu-ray forums?

Rollerball is most certainly a Top 100 film as opposed to a Top 10 (for me), but for every Rollerball at £30 I've got 2 or 3 films like Identity, Alien, or Dog Day Afternoon which cost me less than £10.

I also grabbed Alfredo Garcia while I was there. It's my favourite Peckinpah and the extras were enough to win me over instead of the Spanish or Italian discs.

I think the main gripe is the value for money. I'm not just talking extras here either. The work on these doesn't compare to the proper boutique labels but they're premium priced. Take THE FURY where it was so easily bettered by Arrow and other releases around the world that have been on a par. I bought THE OTHERS during the sale. I'd have paid full price eventually and didn't have the funds when it was initially released. it's a great disc and I can't see anyone else releasing it so I actually feel like I got a bargain!

    I couldn't resist a quick look....

There seemed plenty of grain on show but the picture is, as one would hope, a significant step up from the DVD I once owned.

I finally got round to watching this last night.

It's a very good transfer - the low light scenes are quite grainy, but some of the other shots, particularly close ups, are often extremely detailed.

The action scenes hold up well and the sound is a treat, though I thought the dialogue was a little lows in one of the later scenes.

A good presentation of one of my favourite films.
