As a kid I remember we queued for the front, but having been to Paulton park/ peppa pig world with the little ones, the roller coaster rides for the kids had a note saying those who want less of a thrill (can't remember actual wording), to go at the front.

Does this mean on full blown roller coasters the best thrill is at the back?

on a normal coaster the biggest forces exerted on you will be in the back cart, but obviously visuals play a huge part so people prefer the front

Back seat. Unless it's one of those dangling feet coasters.

if it's a sit in car type like the corkscrew for example then sit at the back because all the cars in front pull you forward at such force, even nemesis will do the same thing.

but if it's one like AIR at alton towers then i would choose the front.

the best seat depends on the type of coaster really and what you want from the ride, back seat feeling of floating, or front for the view.

Also if it one of those 'in the dark' roller coasters, it is more 'exciting' in the front. In the back you can see which wy the front of the train is going so you get advanced warning of the changes in direction.

    Cheers,

Front seat of the Pepsi Max simply for the view from the top and the huge drop and twist straight after!

    1. Front Row every time.

    2. Arms up in the air every time.

    3. Scream (but only on the really scary bits) every time.

    4. Pass rumours round in every waiting line, that people have actually been known to die on this ride.

    5. Have fun (every time). :)

Neither these days, I've pretty much become immune too them. They don't scare me or excite me in any way. Maybe I'm getting old. Stand in line for an hour for 90 seconds of being rattled around a bit, bah. They have some interesting ones in the US by the looks. I reckon I would like to do a wing walk one day soon.

Hulk ride at Universal Studios Florida: Front row seat every time. Most exhilarating ride I've experienced.

Hulk is at ioa gaff. (Pedantic mode)

I agree it iis ace at the front though

But duelling dragons was better when they used to just miss each other, true front row excitement

Sheikra at busch gardens has to be front row (like oblivion but way better) the view is incredible

My son insists the back row goes faster than the others (surely it would overtake??) but it does seem smoother on some coasters

It goes faster over the peaks. As the coaster climbs to the peak it slows down and as the front reaches the peak it is going at it slowest. As the coaster then descends it accelerates so that when the back of the coaster hits the peak it is going faster than when the front went over the peak.

As you point out, at any one time all the parts of the coaster are travelling at the same speed - unless something nasty is about to happen.

    Cheers,

    Nigel

For high roller coasters the front purely for the view and few seconds of hang timr. Nemesis etc the back. On the speed racer at flamingo land anywhere

Oblivion... has to be front seat.
    Ditto Rita queen of Speed

The Ultimate at Lightwater Valley... you get battered to crap sat at the back as your head get smacked around on the head retraint. (REALLY wasn't pleasant TBH)

Surely it's at its slowest when the centre (assuming even weight distribution) reaches the peak?
All cars obviously travel at the same speed as they're joined together, but the difference is exactly where it goes fast and slow.
The centre should give a more natural feel - you're going fastest when you're at the bottom and slowest when you're at the top. Then as you get to either end, the high/low speed is offset by a certain distance.

Manta is the only coaster I have actually got scared on. Looking down at the ground on the way up the big climb at the start is not nice. I think it is because you haven't got the secondary device like a seatbelt lock that you have on other rides.

All sorts of things go through my mind on that ride.

Manta was an amazing coaster but yes, slightly freaky on the big climb. Always been a massive fan of the Kraken at Seaworld too.

Only coaster that has ever scared me is the Saw ride at Thorpe Park, something about that initial climb and fall and not having any seatbelts on the restraints (wife was in tears on the way up and she loves coasters).

Both Rita and Stealth are great at or near the front (never actually do the front but have done then from the second row). Generally I try and get in first few rows but can;t be bothered to queue for the front seats.

Oh and think I've found my favourite coaster a few weeks ago - The Smiler at Alton Towers! Amazing and as good as if not better than anything I've ridden in Florida :)

Absolutely! I find coasters a load of fun (e.g. Sheikra & Hulk are cracking rides) but Manta gave me the fear on the climb. "Oh-my-god-I'm-going-to-fall-out" and I can't look at the horizon to calm down.

Once it started "doing its thing" I was fine though. :)

But then this can happen. Some would say deservedly, in this case :) go to 35 secs when the car is coming back into the station.
