4k on uhd1 during fta hours, when encrypted a hd+ sub will be required.
Tournament starts 27th
Eurosport are showing the French Open in UHD and it will be available on SkyQ. I’m not into tennis however, it’s great to see more UHD programming being made available.
Eurosport launching 4K UHD TV channel for Roland Garros
Eurosport is serving up the French Open in 4K on Sky Q and Virgin, for the first time among a series of firsts.
Read the news.
Also 4K UHD Eurosport on Sky Q (from Monday) and Virgin V6 box, but nothing on BT 4K box.
Eurosport UHD service to launch on Sky Q and Virgin - a516digital
The service will launch on Sunday 27th May, except for Sky Q users, where the channel will be available from Monday 28th May
Shame BT are not carrying it as they did the extra Winter Olympics Eurosport channels though not in 4K.
Those with the Virgin Media V6 and the Full House TV package need to press the red button to access the UHD Tennis while the box is set to the Eurosport 1 or 2 HD channels (channel 521 and channel 522).
Im not sure if im more pleased by the fact there's a 4k broadcast or the fact it's actually announced and not a hidden stream to test like the iplayer rugby... Shall check it out. Anyone know what bitrate they'd be going for on this? I'd guess perhaps 15-18Mbps?
Look forward to trying this out on the V6 box, I assume no HDR?
The V6 box is still awaiting a promised firmware update that would give it the ability to handle HDR metadata. You wont get HDR in association with the V6 until this firmware revision gets a public release. The Roland Garrot UHD broadcasts don't include HDR anyway.
not needed imo, for the last 4 years there has been RG uhd tennis via fransat UHD. Looked stunning in SDR, they also had HDR and a Dolby Vision options last year but the SDR broadcast was plenty good enough.
Keep Virgin etc in their own forums.
The news item this thread was originally started with mentions Virgin Media as much as it mentioned SKY. It isn't the fault of those posting about Virgin media that someone decided to merge threads authored/posted by a member of this board's editorial team. The news item appears on the forum's home page, not the SKY forum.
Anyway, there's a thread within the Virgin media forum with Virgin's official press release announcing this:
Eurosport to bring Roland Garros tennis in Ultra HD 4K to Virgin TV
Will certainly be trying it out.
Worth a look. Come on Tim!
