    Hi guys,

I have a Pioneer VSX895 AV amp from a couple of years ago but it doesn't seem to be driving my Celestion A2s very well. I've been offered a Roksan Caspian 5 channel power amp for 500. How much of an improvement would I get from it? I could possibly bi-amp the Celestions by using 4 of the 5 channels from the Roksan?

Is 500 for the Caspian a good deal?

    Cherers!

Funny enough I have just bought one of these for £500 from oxford audio.
Its built like a tank (and weighs it)..and its 5 x 80w is seriously underated.. also you do get the phono outputs so you could easily bi-amp with another power amp as well.. the manual is on the roksan website.. I reckon is worth 500... check out the back everything is well laid out and looks very good quality.. surprised this amp gets so little notice..

    Hey Matt,

What do you have it paired up with?

Did you buy it new from Oxford Audio or second-hand? Do you know whether they had many left? The store that I may be buying it from only has the one display model left so I'd be tempted to go to Oxford to pick it up if they have brand new ones in stock.

    Cheers,
    chris

no it was secondhand from a previous client of theres who constantly upgrades.. did not even get the original box (not that it really matters with a amp like that!).. I got the only one...I did see one for sale for £450 on hififorsale.com in the freeads.. but if you get it from the dealer you should at least get some sort of warranty.

I have it paired with a tag av32r and a set of Anthony Gallo Speakers and Sub.. RRP is £1050.. so snatch it up imho.. or you could if you wanted to spend less get the parasound 5 channel amp on sale in the classifieds here for £375... another fine amp with underrated power output!

(But £500 for a exdemo is good value anyway you look at it.. I presume its boxed and with full warranty then?..warning it weighs 25KG which I felt when I picked mine up from the courier depot!!)

and tbh a exdemo poweramp is better than new as it should be run in a bit.. its not as if theres moving parts to be worn out/broken :)

Yeah, it should be with a couple of years warranty with it - that's the standard for Roksan right? I printed off the manual last night and i think that's what it says in there.

Only thing from me snapping it right now is not knowing whether it'll be able to drive the Celestion's. The Pioneer struggles and I was advised at looking at something like a Cyrus 8 or Arcam A90 by Superfi Nottingham.

Can you borrow the amp to try it ? Have u read the reviews on the roksan site.. one of them I am sure said they were getting 130W per channel out of it and did not ever trip the protection circuits.. I think its a high power design.. the parasound I mentioned was also about 5x85w and from the ppl how had owned them they had no probs running hard speakers....

    cheers

Heres the reviews I saw :

    http://www.roksan.co.uk/r_avamp.html

Heres a snippet from a hifi choice review :

"This five-channel power amplifier is capable of sustaining 2x140W right across the 20Hz-20kHz audio spectrum. With all five channels driven flat out, this falls only slightly to 5x130W, which is well in excess of its rated 5x85W. This amp is a more able performer than most, delivering some 175W, 305W into 8 and 4 ohm loads with a massive 465W (15.2A) and 512W (22.6A) into 2 and 1 ohm loads under dynamic conditions."

    Tempting huh :)

You should become a salesman Matt! ;)

I think I'll be calling up the dealer on Tuesday morning to put my name and a sold sticker on the amp! They've said that I can take it away and try it but I'm in a bit of an awkward situation with my hifi gear being in Swindon and me temporarily living in Cambridge but travelling a lot with work so rarely go back to Swindon. I'm going through the process of buying a new house and this is where the Roksan's new home will be.

Worst case scenario, I'll just flea-bay it! :D

    Cheers again Matt! :)

    Hi,

I have the Roksan AV5. Until I split my system into separate hi-fi and AV systems I used it to drive a pair of B&W 805s and an HTM2. These are notoriously power hungry and the Roksan never flinched.

    Regards,

    Jules.

Did manage to pick up a Rotel 1066 pre to pair it up with today though :)
