ripping dvds

Active Member
Hi all, here goes I am looking at ripping all my dvds and putting them onto an external hardrive so I can plug the hardrive into my tv and watch them back, I would like the dvds to be sorted into genre and have thumbnails displayed when I connect it to my tv,what I would like to know is there any software I can get for my MBP to do this?and what hardrive would you recommend to do this on?
Thanks in advance for your help
P.s I am not very good with this kind of thing so I will need the simplest solution.

Check out iVI from South Pole Software (don't buy it from the Apple APP store as that can't import straight DVD).
It'll convert them to .m4v and add all the metadata in one go. It should be a quite quick on you MBP?
A completely free alternative is to use Handbrake to create the .m4v and then use Subler to add the meta data.
