I have been using MakeMKV to RIP my Blu-Rays and then compress with Handbrake.

Every so often I RIP a Blu-Ray and I get the wrong written language, usually French. By this I mean all written text, signs, books, billboards, etc are in the wrong language. The latest one is finding Dory.

Is there a simple fix. I can't see anything in the MakeMKV preferences.

Are you talking about Cover and Fanart or something else.

The actual film. So when Dory finds the sign in the sea life centre about echo location it is in French.

Also Zootropolis is another film but there have been a few more.

I did notice that when MakeMKV scanned the disk there were 5 apparently identical very large files and I choose one. Maybe I choose the wrong one but how do I know which to use.

I just choose the one that makes it clear there is English audio and subtitles. Not had a foreign language cockup yet in two years of ripping discs with MakeMkv. Takes a bit of thought before hitting start but I can see how mistakes might be easily made.

They all have English audio and subtitle options and the audio is not the issue it is the written text within the film.

Another example is UP and yes they are all animated films as far as I can remember.

Can't get to my ripping PC just now as it is in the spare room and we have visitors.

Are you making sure you deselect all the foreign forced subs ?

I've encountered the same problem. I've ended up ripping all the files and watching the start of each to determine which is the English version.

That is a pity as it can take 45 minutes for MakeMKV to rip one file so having to rip 5 in the finding Dory example will take 4 hours then I have to check each so even longer.

Strange how no one else has this problem.

It's not a fault, it's how the BD is authored as the disk supports many geographic regions. Some companies like Disney tend to use the same file ID for each regional variation, so use Google to search for the MPLS for english and rip that one.

There are other disks that will show many more copies of the movie (a hundred or more) as a form of copy protection so you will have to get used to occasionally looking for help, and usually the MakeMKV forums would be a good place to start.

As you can see from the above image the street sign is all in French.

So the second of the large files has an MPLS of 800 which appears to be the one I need.

Will have a look at Zootropolis and UP in a bit.

Had a look at Zootropolis and the second file had a MPLS of 800 so ripping that just now.

Will check it before I compress and transfer to my NAS.

    Yes, they all look identical.

By the way what does the attachment at the end of the file list do.

All foreign languages are deselected by default.

The only language selected is English.

If you have the finding Dory disk rip with MakeMKV and pick the first large file or more importantly the non 800.mpls list. If I get a chance tomorrow I will check the the exact number for French.

You're just ripping the wrong titles.

I know, but how do I know I have ripped the right title.

A good example is UP where the mpls file options are 300, 301, 302, 303 and 304. The rule I found about Disney was to use 800 which did work for Finding Dory and Zootropolis but as you can see there is no 800 option on UP and I tried 300 and its French again.

The issue is you don't necessarily.

I thought if you expanded them it gave you the length of each m2ts though and its usually the short ones that are in different languages (i.e. you sign posts) therefore you can watch them depending on the configuration with VLC.

As others have said, Disney uses seamless branching so they can have localised language text in the film.
The correct playlist that has English will always have a slightly shorter overall runtime than the other similar sized 'foreign language' playlists.

If you put the disc in a Blu-ray player & play it in a different language (eg French), after the normal credits have finished you'll see there is an additional few mins of credits for the French (or whichever language dubbing/localisation/translation staff. The English version doesn't have these additional credits, only the foreign language ones do.

The playlists for Finding Dory are all the same so looking for a slightly shorter play list would not work on that film.

For UP however there are two slightly longer and they are both French Text and the fractionally shorter, well one at least does appear to be English.
