richer sounds yamaha speaker package if you bought or are thinking of buying read on

I tried to get price promise on the nsp-230 at RS London Bridge yesterday and they refused - one web site only had a demo which wasn't for sale and they refused to price promise against Yamaha web site as it is only a RRP and I cannot buy the speakers from the yamaha web site.

can u provide any more details on how u got your price promise, branch, salesperson, etc.

many thanks

JasoN

i saw the add on yam's website i went into richers and explained they give me an extra 10 quid price match and blamed their buying dept for getting prices wrong it was the liverpool branch.hope this helps. are they still charging £200 ?

Yes - I questioned the sales person as to how they can sell at £40 over the RRP and he said he still wouldn't price match it !

I'm not talking about the enthusiasts on this forum..I'm talking about the GP.

I think anyone who has made the effort to go to a specialist shop insted of walking into the nearest currys or dixons has done well in my book. (and yes, I do think RS is a specialist shop)

Who would you rather buy from RS or DIXONS?

sounddog is making a lot of good (and correct) points on this one. the thing is to find out from these and other forums before going to RS knowing what you want. richer have got a lot of newbies going in this great 'hobby' of ours and they've always beaten anyones price for me and others I know. they will give you youre money back if your not happy and their extended guarantees are the best in the country. yes they have some richardheads working for them but you wouldn't buy a pie in a chip shop if you wanted a fish (would you?) just because a spotty kid said it was better.:)

Most people on this forum do ask questions before shopping but less than 1% of Richer Sounds customers are members here.

I would imagine that every customer at Richer Sounds knows the difference between a pie and a fish but that doesn't necessarily mean that they know the differences between Sherwood and Denon and rightly or wrongly it has always been assumed that those working in specialist retail outlets know what they are talking about.

Hear hear.

I think RS is great if you know exactly what your after and they have the items in stock, everyone likes saving money i would of thought.
I must say though, my local branch has always been very helpful and polite and never ever tried to push any particular brand names goods onto me.

I think my funniest RS moment was when enquiring about the Servo 15, and the sales assistant (who was new then I believe) tried flogging me a Gale sub instead. Which prompted my patronising "WTF are you on?" look.

And speaking of which, I wonder how many people go into RS (from this forum) with the "none of you have a clue" and "I know better" attitude before we've even spoken to some of the staff? I know I'm guilty of that in the past, and it's NOT necessarily the case (aside from the real techy boffs on here). Just a thought.

obviously if someone is not a member of or visitor to this forum then this forum canot advise them.
a lot more than 1% of forum members shop or have shopped at Richer Sounds

if richers know the rrp which i assure you they do and still insist on charging more then you can complain by not buying anything else off them i find it strange the liverpool branch admit the mistake but another branch dosen't.

Used to be a runner at RS to cover a bill here and there whilst at University- I'd say that the split of genuinely intelligent enthusiasts and those who wouldn't know hifi if you beat them to death with a AV amp was 50-50 but it is getting worse. Like every retailer on the planet, they'll push lower quality items onto people who are willing to spend hard earned cash without the slightest bit of research (and those who walk into any purchase in life with their eyes closed seldom get the best deal). I guess it is now best to view them as having items that are periodically worth buying rather than consistently so- the PM8200 I own is my case in point- picked it up for £200 when the last of them went through RS. I have met bigger cretins in suposedly better stores but will concede with some regret that RS is not short of them.

So are we saying

1. don't trust shops because they sell you things to benifit them

2. Ask people on AV forum for advice (see threads on Denon 2900)

3. Lisen to the kit first.

4. Purchase from the web or anywhere were you get the cheapest price.

All the above point seem sensible, however you can pick fault with anyone of them......

So your damed if you and damed if you don't???

The generally point is that the people that work in RS, or any other retail outlet, are salesman. There job is to sell and maximise their profits - fact. I know this having had experience doing a summer job at Phones 4U.

These places are not non-profit independant bodies providing information for free.

I think the the old saying still applies 100 % - caveat emptor!

Individuals should start taking there own responsibility, it applies to so many areas in this day and age! McDonalds and obesiety are a case in point.

So what if RS got a price wrong, aslong as people are aware of it and they are refunding their mistake, they are only human!

Mark.

Having shopped at Richer Sounds a number of times over the years, I can say that in the 80's their staff were very knowledgeable (genuine hi-fi enthusiasts), I never found stuff out of stock and they gave a great service with prices that a schoolboy (like I was then) could afford.

However, the only shop was in London Bridge and they only sold 'real' hi-fi.

These days they sell a much, much wider range of stuff from dozens of stores. Is it a suprise that a particular sales person does not have the depth of knowledge now?

I won't rush back there again, because they don't meet my needs now, but they are much better than going to an electrical superstore.
