Richer Sounds let me down - where can I get a PX80?!

In a bit of a dilema in that I've had a lot of home improvements going on -knocking down walls, moving where my lounge is etc. & now have the new lounge just about ready.

No ariel feed in the new room yet, so will be getting a sat dish with quad LNB put up in the next week or two.

-Spent a lot of time over the Xmas break reading up on what TV/sat receiver to get & settled on a PX80B & Humaz Foxsat HDR 320gb.

Some great deals on over Xmas on the PX80b, but chose to go with my local Richer Sounds due to wanting the peace of mind with the 5 yr warranty. Reserved one, along with a Foxsat HDR on 2nd Jan & asked for confirmation that they would definitely be getting more stock in for the PX80b - was assured that they would - head office had stock - no problems. They weren't as sure for the Foxsat, but fair enough.

Couple of weeks later phone up & they can't find my name on the list! - I had watched the manager write it down while I was in there! - left my details again. Phoned up today, no more stock coming in that's it sorry.

They were £499 (+£50 5yr warranty) on 2nd Jan, & now when I'm looking around tonight, they're £599 if you can get one & I can't find any in stock anywhere. To say I'm dissapointed is an understatement.

I think Richer Sounds should give me a £100 compensation! - If they had said that there had been any doubt over stock on the 2nd Jan then I would have bought one elsewhere.

It seems to me that they're only interested in selling you an LG or Samsung - that's all they seem to carry in stock. I suppose they must get bigger margins on those two suppliers...

Anyway, rant over - anyone know where I can get a PX80B (& a Foxsat HDR for that matter) near to Brighton?

Thanks

You could try Curry's for the PX80. Their £599 but 1 yrs warranty only. £599 in House of Fraser with 5 yr warranty but I don't think they have them in stock.

Dear Pearcy93,

I was sorry to read your comments with regards to the problems you experienced whilst trying to reserve and purchase a Panasonic TH42PX80 plasma television from us.

Over the busy Christmas season we have experienced an extremely high demand for this product and unfortunately we sold out very quickly and Panasonic have been unable to supply us with any additional stock, much to our obvious frustration.

Of course this does not excuse the fact that you did not receive an update phone call from our store to keep you informed, and I cannot apologise enough for this. Certainly, if you are able to let me know which of our stores you visited then I assure you I shall take this up as a matter of urgency with the store manager and his team to investigate this further.

Also as we don't like to disappoint our customers we do always try our best to offer comparable products on the occasions where a particular product is unavailable.

In the meantime, whilst I'm afraid I am unable to supply you with the specific model you wanted, please do let me know if you would still like to purchase a TV and I will do my best to help.

Yours sincerely,

John Clayton

Take this response with a large pinch of salt. Richer Sounds will have known in early December (along with all other dealers such as ourselves) that the PX80 models were being discontinued, after all, this was the sole reason they were being offered so cheaply. The fact that they led you to believe that stock was plentiful, was perhaps to keep you 'under their wing' and to get you back in the shop when you were ready to buy. I would however say, that this is becoming a very common tactic with a lot of retailers, a method of putting you off shopping around and finding a better deal. Richer Sounds do in my own personal experience, seem to be quite biased towards the (tv) brands with the bigger margins and rarely have good availability on the less profitable brands.

My dealings with Richer Sounds have always been good.
Their way of trading may mean there is a risk that stock runs out, just look at their prices.
I have never been pushed towards a 'favoured' product range, and I have found them honest and unbiased.
My dealings have been with the Liverpool branch.

ps. nice to have someone important from the AV world responding on these forums. Pity Virgin Media don't.

That is 100% true they do 'push' people who dont know what they are after towards products 'RS' make more money on (own brands as apposed to discounted older models)

However I do have to say when I have had problems the customer service people DO alot to help sort things. It takes alot for me to be impressed but my recent dealings with RS have changed my opinion of them

Give this guy above an email and see if he can sort you out a deal - I am sure its worth him 'helping you out' if not just for good PR on this forum...

Yesterday I was impressed to see the the customer friendly approach being displayed by John Clayton of Richer Sounds Management.

Today I was very disappointed by their Southampton Branch.

Previously I had brought and then returned a Marantz 6002 amp (could not test in store because their demo room is full of stock, so as usual they said "take it and try it - if not good return it". After 10 days returned it in as new condition but was told I had to have a credit voucher instead of a refund.

So this left me with £200 odd for RS when I next wanted any gear. I decided to buy a Logitech Squeezebox Duet (list £270, Richer Sounds on line price £250, Superfi £245, and on cooltopia.com - cool products, cool ideas, cool people they are £220.

So we all know that RS offer a price beat deal " ...But don't fear WITH RICHER SOUNDS YOU GET THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS: A NAME YOU CAN TRUST AND OUR PRICE BEAT TO GUARANTEE YOU THE ABSOLUTE LOWEST PRICES!
If you do find the product you want for less, we will still beat any lower price by up to £100.
• All that we ask is that the product be brand new, boxed and actually in stock at time of purchase.
• We will happily price beat against other web retailers (must include next day P&P when products can't be collected) as long as we can verify stocks."...
and they offer to beat any web advertised price by £10 for products costing
£101 to £1000.

So I expected to pay £220 - £10 plus p&p - WRONG!

I was served by Matt the manager who (between phone calls) told me that the price beater policy "does not apply to accessories" and graciously offered me the Richer Sounds web price of £249.99. With a £200 refund RS voucher in my pocket I couldn't go elsewhere and having wasted too much time on Richer Sounds anyway I paid up.

Has anyone else come across this hidden "does not apply to accessories" policy?
Personally I've resolved to steer clear of RS in future and use a good local dealer even if it means paying a bit more.

Thanks for that Ted - I've bought it!

-Used ebuyer quite a bit for computer stuff :)

How much did you pay? They're showing 14 in stock now but at £816.

I intended to buy mine (37PX80) from RS but felt mucked about by the shop (Chester) compounded by the fact that their phone is always engaged. They too tried to steer me towards something else but I not in a pushy way.

They put my name in their book but I'd be gob-smacked if that worked for anything, it was just pages and pages of stuff people wanted. Would they really remember and go through it and call people?

In the end got one from Comet for same price but warranty was a bit dearer. May cancel the warranty (got 45 days to decide...not sure).

Yes, just seen that! - paid £599.01, not sure what the 1 pence was all about. Dissapointed that I wasn't able to buy one at £487 (with the voucher code) at Dixons/Currys etc. 4 weeks ago, which is exactly what I would have done if there was any doubt that RS wouldn't be getting stock in... but I couldn't see any better options available for around £600 so am relieved to have secured one.

Taken straight from the horses mouth ( ie RS website ) certainly is not hidden.... just rather small. Ive highlighted the appropriate bit to make it nice and obvious... People need to read a little more :/

http://www.richersounds.com/information.php?cda=static&cst=pricebeat

Even though our national network of fun stores aims to give you great service, expert advice, product demonstrations and immediate availability we still don't want to be beaten by internet retailers who simply put boxes in the post! Although we consistently offer the absolute lowest hi-fi and TV prices on the high street we do acknowledge that we are occasionally undercut by e-tailers offering a bare-bones service and in many cases questionable back-up when things go wrong. But don't fear WITH RICHER SOUNDS YOU GET THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS: A NAME YOU CAN TRUST AND OUR PRICE BEAT TO GUARANTEE YOU THE ABSOLUTE LOWEST PRICES!

If you do find the product you want for less, we will still beat any lower price by up to £100.

• All that we ask is that the product be brand new, boxed and actually in stock at time of purchase.

• We will happily price beat against other web retailers (must include next day P&P when products can't be collected) as long as we can verify stocks.

• Price beat on TVs applies only when the price of a 5 year warranty is added to both theirs and ours. Note our 5 year warranties are incredible value: a fraction of the prices charged by our competitors, just 10% of the purchase price. For example, a 5 year 'at home' warranty on a Philips 32" LCD TV at £399.95 is just a one off payment of only £39.95.

Here's an example of how the price beat works including warranty costs:
Richer Sounds - 37xxx TV : £599.95 plus 5 year 'at home' guarantee : £59.95 gives a total of £659.90
Unlikely Retailer - 37xxx TV : £549.95 plus 5 year 'at home' guarantee : £99.95 gives a total of £649.90

So, with the cost of both warranties added, the other retailer is cheaper by £10. We will beat their price by £10 and sell the TV, including 5 year warranty, for £639.90!

• Our Price Challenge is even valid up to 7 days after purchase!
SEEN IT ADVERTISED CHEAPER?

NOT ONLY WILL WE MATCH ANY GENUINE ADVERTISED PRICE BUT WE'LL ALSO GIVE YOU:
Products over £4001: £100

Products from £3001 to £4000: £50

Products from £1001 to £3000: £20

Products from £101 to £1000: £10

Products up to £100: £5

Excludes special orders, accessories & portables

Personally im not a fan of price beat / price match... ill just give my business to whoever has it the cheapest and has gone to the effort of putting it at that price in the first place.

However many things ill happily pay a bit more for good customer service...Richer Sounds are in the majority excellent as is scan.co.uk both good examples they are excellent.. Ive spent many thousands at places who offer good service. Saying that though on occasion ive gone for "cheapest" because it is just so much cheaper.

Boxrick,

Point taken, I missed the small print at the bottom under the flashing £ stars.

But when is something an accessory? and when is it a system ?

If you look at Richer Sounds Multi-room systems Products you will see the Squeeze Box Duet listed as a multiroom system for £249.. To me a SB duet with a controller, a receiver and set of server software is more a system and less of an accessory than say a CDP or a DAC.

If you look on the RS catalog they actually quote "lowest price guaranteed on the SB duet advert!

The Southampton shop did query if Cooltopia.com is a "proper" retailer - well I can buy one from them and anyway SB Duets are £225 on Ebuyer inc p&p.

I think you are right about price beat/price match - it seems more perceptual than real as a benefit to the buyer! But I am sure it benefits RS by making customers think they will get the best deal there.

In summary I still feel let down by Richer Sounds.

Just managed to reserve a Foxsat HDR at my local Argos!

-Did a stock check last night & 1 available, tried to reserve it & their site had problems, kept getting a blank page! grr

Got up this morning & managed to reserve it this time - :D

Just arranging a Sat dish install in the coming week, so hopefully should be up & running soon (finally!).

House of Fraser has reduced them to £549. I just got the last one in Middlesbrough. They still have the display model left, might get that even cheaper.

Dear Badger B,

I was sorry to hear that our Southampton store would not honour our price beat policy on your recent visit.

Indeed whilst accessories are excluded from our price beat policy I would have expected our store manager to have offered you a deal as a compromise after taking into consideration the cheaper prices you quoted. I will be speaking with him to find out why this was not the case.

The last thing we want is a dissatisfied customer and therefore I am more than happy to authorise this price beat and refund the difference for you on this occasion. So that I may arrange this for you please would you contact me via private message?

Finally, for information, full details of our price beat policy and our terms and conditions can be found on our website at Richer Sounds - The UK's Hi-Fi, Home Cinema & Flat Panel Tv Specialists!

In the meantime, thank you for bringing this matter to my attention and please do not hesitate to let me know should you have any further queries.

Sorry to here about your problems with Richersounds but I have recently delt with Richersounds in Belfast and have found there staff and management extremely helpful.
The lack of bs was refreshing, couldn't recommend them enough.

No, the guys serving in the Southampton shop are also fine - friendly and helpful when they can be, it is just that they are incredibly busy selling mainly LCD TVs .

The shop is small, crowded and there is currently no demo room. Perhaps Richer sounds is just too successful!

As I said above I find the pricing policy "strange". I've realised that (for me) I'd rather go somewhere less "busy" that focusses more on hi-fi!

-Just a quick note to say thanks to John Clayton who contacted my via PM & has been trying to get to the bottom of the issues with my situation.

From Johns comments it's clear that Richer Sounds do care about their customer care, so maybe my particular situation was affected by the excessively busy period over Christmas/New Year.

Either way, I've now collected my Foxsat HDR (from Argos) & have a PX80B on it's way.

Thanks again for everyones help.

Another quick note to say that after contact by PM my problems have been very fairly resolved by Richer Sounds' Operations Director John Clayton.

My thanks to him and everyone else!
