I am currently using the s-video output from my DVD recorder to feed my projector, i have seen RGB to s - video converters for £50 would this offer a better picture over my current setup ?

No - if you already have S-Video being Output by your source then you have no requirement for the RGB2S-Video converter.
What other Inputs are on your Source and Projector? There may be an alternative solution for you.

thanks for the reply,
I have my sky box connected to my dvd recorder, i take the s-video output from that to my SONY VPL-HS2(wish i hadnt bought the thing now). I am using the s-video input to the projector. I can by an optional component cable for it but the are £80+ and hard to get hold of
