    Hi,

As I am very new to all this plasma stuff, can I get some of your expert opinions on the following plasmas. I think that I will go for 37" screen, although I am interested to hear what size rooms people with a 42" screen have, as I only have a 4m x 4.6m room.

    PHILIPS 37PF9946 -- 37" £1300
    Samsung PS37S4SX 37" £1385

Or any other 37" plasma for around this price (or lower).

This will all be connected up to a DENON DHT500SD

    Thanks alot

I suspect that you might also want to include the Panasonic 37" plasma monitor (TH-37PW7B). Not including Panasonic plasmas is fighting talk around here, mister...

Funnily enough, the TH37PW7B was going to be the next option (plus it can be bought for £200 less), oh and what is the TY 42TM6TC input board that Empire direct supply. It states scart although i keep reading about VGA input on this forum.

by the way: Does everyone own a panny on this forum? It seems that way. ;)

many do mate ;-) they are bloody good screens. i reckon you'd be ok for a 42" in you room....about 3m viewing distance seems to be the recommended.

Forget reviews - hit the shops and judge for yourself!

Id recommend a look at the Philips 42PF9946: can be had for £1500, including at Costco (read: returns policy to make M&S jealous) this week only. The size difference is bigger than it sounds and worth the money - the 42" has an inherently better picture too.

In my opinion, the Panasonic alternatives aren't quite the wonder sets many on here make them out to be. If I think it, you may think it - so test for yourself.

Size is not a worry for your room: even 50" would be fine.

Superpicel - thanks for the honest response. I have checked out a few plasmas, although not in the real world as I have only seen them in the big shops (Comet, John Lewis etc...) So I was wondering what they are like for standard viewers experience (Sky+ etc...)

Aren't costco american based? Do they have shops in the UK?

What height is recommended for a plasma from peoples experiences? As i do plan on purchasing a new fireplace (and mantle) and placing it above.

    Cheers

    Hi Stuart

Just a couple of quick thoughts reading through your tread...

Firstly, definitely don't discount Phillips or any of the other recommended manufacturers here, but for me the Panny Viera 37" was the ONLY set in the running for the overall package - which, rightly or wrongly, included the way the whole shooting match looked on it's cabinet stand/shelves - a class of it's own and no mistake!

Secondly, mounting above the mantlepiece..? Would look great as you walk in the room and whilst stood up, but staring upwards at the telly while sat/lying down has gotta get tiring hasn't it?

    Just a thought ;)

For what it's worth - get the Viera and love the fact that you did!

    Cheers!

I never recommended anyone buy a Tiny plasma, in fact quite the opposite.

I'd appreciate if you took back that cheap attempt at discrediting my opinion. Thank you, kind sir. :D

Though we all got a little off the beaten track there....

The av-sales deal looks good 42" Panny + media box. Evene though I know the screen will fit (it will be on the 4.6m wall) what are users experiences of a large screen on a wall of this size? Whilst i can appreciate that movies will be great, although whats it like having a massive dot cotton on the wall when watching eastenders for instance? It sounds scary.

I would be sat about 3.5 metres away. Oh and will John Lewis match any decent prices?

Sorry I know its a lot of questions, although i do value people opinions rather than sales people.

take a look in the plasma out for the lads thread for pics of plasma over fireplaces. Ours sits above were the fireplace would be if we had one (just incase we do get one) but from the distance we are sat at, the height is fine.

No neck ache, or anything. Even SWMBO is happy with the position, and if she isn't complaining about sore neck etc, it's gotta be OK :D

based on your room size, it's very similar to ours about about 12.5' X 13.5' - close to being a squareroom. Definately look at the 42" jobby, no need not to really, price wise nothing in it (37" maybe slightly dearer even)

    regards
    Gary

thanks nealgs. :smashin: the room is similar (and square)...

I have been looking through the thread that you stated, and there are quite a few pics with the plasma above the fireplace. If I go for the Panny 42", what is the media box like?
