I am currently running the following setup in my main living room TV:
    - VU+ duo2 for sat and cable TV and PVR
    - jailbroken ATV2. I use it to stream TV shows bought on iTunes as well as DVD Rips and other movies/videos of my Synology NAS using xbmc

The setup has been working like that for some time now, but I am more and more limited by the low specs of the ATV. I have more and more 1080p content that will not stream on the ATV. As I don't want to put a third device just for the media streaming, I tried exploring streaming possibilities on the VU+. Tried the new XBMC BH version, tried running dreamplex with a plex server on my NAS, but I cannot get the smooth and easy functioning I have with xbmc on the atv2.

Any advice, possibility I haven't thought of?

I upgraded from an ATV2 to an Intel NUC (i3) running Openelec with KODi... no problems with 1080p H265 rips. I recently setup up the new Pi 2 for a friend and was quite surprised by its speediness, although I prefer my NUC.

But than I lose the streaming from iTunes unless there is an alternative way?

Maybe a Mac Mini could do both?

I dumped my ATV because it was slow & limited... loved it, but it was showing its age. I put XBMC on it but that was a horrible experience... kept crashing. When I got an Intel NUC everything worked beautifully. Plus there are add-ons for Netflix, Amazon etc as well as a few less legal streaming options.

Was thinking of that. Thing is that as much as I could read in the different forums itunes streaming requires ATV. If not the case will be happy to know!

Surely you wouldn't be streaming with a Mac mini, you'd use iTunes directly.

Yes indeed this is an option. Will definitely look into that!

after a whole weekend of playing around and reading on the web things look pretty frustrating. I have flashed my vu+ to finally try XBMC working correctly and this is a no go. It seems XBMC on E2 boxes is simply a no go. On the other hand I don't see any other boxes (not even Wetek) that can get even closer to the TV experience I have with my Duo2 (which allows me to watch both Sat and cable TV on the same box in a transparent way). This means I am condemned to maintain one TV box and one dedicated media streamer....it seems this will be a mac mini than, but still need to think this one through.....
