When I restart Windows, the PC will shut down Windows, completely power off the computer, power itself back on and then load Windows.

It used to restart Windows without switching the computer off and on, so some setting has been changed somewhere.

Anybody know what that setting is ?

    Thanks

Umm, clicking restart from the Start menu will shut down your computer and turn it back on...

Before, it just used to go to BIOS and then restart Windows. Now it turns off fans, drives and everything before restarting. I just thought there was a reg edit or something you can do to change this behaviour. No big deal if not.

Applications usually advise a restart to apply some setting changes, but sometimes this is just playing it safe.

Depends on what settings need reapplying, but often simply logging off and then logging on is sufficient.

Problem is, other than trying, there is no way of knowing whether a log off/on is sufficent.

    Cheers,

    Nigel

"Shift + Restart" was mentioned somewhere. I tried it but, no change, still got a power off restart.

However, I was going to check BIOS settings, so restarted Windows again, but this time the computer didn't power off. It loaded the BIOS then Windows. Tried it again and yep, it's fine now :smashin:.

Shift+Restart was Windows 3.1/95/98 that I remember! Mine never switches off on a restart, it always just does a soft reboot on the bios. I thought you were looking for a restart straight into the "Starting Windows" boot logo routine!
