Resistive touch panel problems!

Just bought and installed a 17" 4-wire resistive touch panel over an old lcd monitor I had laying around. I cannot get the darn thing to work properly. It detects touch, but can't be calibrated properly. I can run through a 4 point calibration, 25 point, etc, but the touch response is always erratic, and flat out wrong. I'm beginning to wonder if maybe there's a problem with the controller, the screen, or both. It's a 4-wire panel, but a 5-wire controller. Can you use such a controller with a 4-wire panel?? I can't find much information using Google, so I turn to the board for help. Please!
