I want to get this from cdwow but it's region 3. I saw in another thread that region 3 dvd gets cut alot. Is this true? Does anyone have this version or should I not bother and just get the normal DD 5.1?

R3 discs are hardly EVER cut unless it's extreme violence, or in some cases nudity (and even then some things are cut less than the UK versions -- take Malena for example... R3 is fully uncut, while the UK version is hacked to pieces). It's a bit of a myth really that they have harsh censorship laws. A film like Resident Evil: Apocalypse is extremely unlikely to have been cut in any way. You do miss out on the two commentaries though.

This looks more like a HK R3,these are never cut.
Also imdb.com lists the films running time as 94min.,and cd-wow
lists the running time for the R3 as 94 min.
    Wasn't this a '15' cert. at the cinema?,I can't see their
being anything in it to merit any cuts anyway.

the Hong Kong release of Wrong Turn was cut pretty badly.
The Hong Kong Human Pork Chop was missing bits aswell. And their Itchi The Killer was butchered a lot more than the UK version... by some 11 minutes. And the old Shaw Brothers Human Lanterns is cut too.
Those are just the ones that immediately spring to mind. There's a lot more.

    Rambo,
I honestly didn't realise HK releases were cut now as most of the HK R3
DVD's I've got are not cut. But I suppose it depends on the film.

I've got the HK R3 of 'Haute Tension' on the way which is apparently uncut
and has the running time listed as per the actual running time of the film.
Hopefully this means that it is a proper conversion and not pal > ntsc
    like the korean version.

I'd be interested to hear from anyone with this version of 'Haute Tension'
and can tell me if it is uncut and proper length - 90 min.

I watched this last night and was mystified as to why it has been slammed universally in all reviews.
As a brain-switched-off sci-fi actioner it was surprisingly good!
It's not the low-budget rip-off sequel people have made out (for that see the unbelievably bad Starship Troopers 2!) and was better than the first movie for me.

Great, great surround effects, two good looking (and moving) heroines, big guns, superb stunts and sfx: what more can you want from a video game sourced movie?

    Answered you own question mate...

People don't want "No brainers" anymore...just look at the oscar nominations for the best movie...not that I'm saying that this should have been nominated or anything...

People don't expect to use their brains while watching an action sci-fi movie and nobody would expect a movie of this kind to be recommended for Oscar's either

Do they...? Do you not feel insulted when asked to make head or tail of drivel like van Helsing...?
And I stated that this wasn't expected to be nominated...

I think it is only fair to take films in context and take into account the market it is designed for.

RE:2 and Van Helsing; I mean the titles tell you all you need to know!
I also loved ID:4 and Godzilla as they totally did what they said on the tin.

That's not to say I don't enjoy more cerebral movies as well, but when I see a movie named after a computer game or comic, I don't complain when I get well-executed eye-candy...

yes I do feel insulted by certain blockbusters but obviously somebody must like them for them to continue making them .

To be honest I have not seen Van Helsing but there are always big budget science-fiction/fantasy/action movie flops which miss the mark by a mile (the League of extraordinary Gentlemen, men in black 2, Spiderman, Godzilla, the Matrix revolutions, independence Day... To name but a few).

But they are also big budget science fiction/fantasy/action movies which are good to very good like for example... I, robot; Resident evil: apocalypse; Terminator 2 and 3 (I know T3 was a little bit of a let down but it is still an enjoyable movie in its own right), the Matrix,The lord Of the Rings trilogy, the Star Wars trilogy and its prequels, Armageddon. Very rarely do you have to think in these types of movies which I suppose is part of their appeal, they are pure unadulterated mindless fun.

I can't think of many sci-fi action movies where you use your brain. In fact the last "so-called" intelligent sci-fi action movie(s) that I can think of were the Matrix sequels. They "claimed" to be more intelligent but instead were dull as dishwater between action sequences spouting off philosophical ideas but failing to tie everything together in an interesting and cohesive manner.

With films like resident evil apocalypse you just hope that they make them well and all the elements combined to make a great movie... Well an enjoyable movie anyway. Great sci-fi action movies are few and far between, unfortunately.

For the record I thought resident evil: apocalypse was miles better than people would have you believe aswell. I'm not trying to say it doesn't have its flaws but had made it good night's entertainment and I just hope that if/when Resident evil 3 is made that also hits the mark! or thereabouts.

I admit people want to watch good films but I'm not sure I believe that they don't want "no-brainers". You only have to look at box-office receipts and DVD sales to know that the so called "no-brainer" sci-fi action movie is just as popular as always. In fact one of the most popular films of all time Star Wars a new hope is a no-brainer! The most successful film of all time, Titanic, is a no-brainer. You only need to look on forums such as this to see that the scifi action movie interests a lot of people and is usually more of a buzz around the latest science fiction/action movie to be released on DVD than the average Oscar-nominated film.

But does the bit rate make any difference...? Surely it's the mix that counts...

Without a direct comparison with a lower bit rate DTS I can't say family guy. However, it is a fantastic soundtrack and it's a fantastic mix.

Racquel, it says 6.1 on the box
