I've heard that the Region 1 SE of "Reservoir Dogs" has a bad picture and some other problems. Is the Region 4 SE any better?

I have the region 1 , and the Picture is ok but could have been better :(
With the region 4 , could not say if it's any better but would not think so . Anyway the region 1's not that bad :D

    Hi Jo,

www.dvdcompare.net rates these two versions as equal. Take your pick - NTSC or PAL. Widescreen Review magazine gave the R1 SE version a mark of 3.5 out of 5 for picture quality and rated it as much sharper and cleaner than the original non-anamorphic release but with weaker blacks. The DD and DTS soundtracks both scored 4 out of 5. Hope this helps.

The R4 looks great, R1 was very washed out colour-wise. DVDcompare rarely take picture and sound quality into account when reaching their conclusions. The DD and DTS tracks on the R4 are both exactly the same.

Reading this review, the Reg 4 CE sounds just as bad as the Reg 1 CE I returned.

I've decided to stick with my Reg 2. It's only stereo but as this movie is predominantly dialogue and the video transfer is the best available IMO, I can live with it.

I have read official reviews which state tarentino intended the film to have a washed out look with regard to colours theyre not meant to be absolute black, my own opinion is the film is presented exactly as seen in the cinemas and the american edition has got it right and if anyone wishes to query this i'll have to dig out the review and print the website tskkk but from all accounts the film never had any absolute blacks at the cinema and had a washed out look which was intentional

Yup, I have read that too Foxy and wouldn't dream of arguing against that. However, it's all about preference and in my case, although Tarantino intended it to look like that, I couldn't stand it. This is one occasion where I have personally gone against the director's intention. I owned the R1 and sent it back for a refund. I then bought the cheap R2. The R2 has a better transfer to my eyes and I'm more comfortable watching it. That's my reason for sticking with it.

I've not found the R1 SE to be particularly offensive. In fact, when I first popped it in my player I wondered what all the fuss was about as I've seen far worse transfers than that. It's a bit washed out, yes, but it isn't that bad. I'm happy with it anyway.

I did indeed, but wasn't overly impressed with them at the time TBH. Maybe I was just too upset at the transfer :(
