Hi all, after a bit of advice.

My friends pc has completely died but I want to know if is possible to rescue all of his photos etc from the hdd?

Can I simply remove it and hook it up to another pc? If so how?

If the hard drive is dead then you're out of luck, if there is a little life left in the hard drive then transfer the file manually.

However you can try Recuva.

Sorry for my lack of knowledge but how do I fit a USB caddy?

Yes, I think you can use that hdd to any other PC and use that to recover your photos, etc. from the HDD, but I can say it guaranteed as if there is any physical damage, then it is not possible. Let's hope for the best and try to connect.

Sorry, I didn't read your post properly. Yes you can connect the hard drive to another PC, simply remove it from the fried PC and plug it into the motherboard of the new PC.

Cheers guys, can it be done via USB rather than opening up my PC?

No unless you have a spare USB external hard drive case.

Is the hard drive IDE or SATA?

It's from an 8 yr old xp PC so I think it's IDE

Cheap as chips but this will do the job or this one that does IDE or SATA.
