I'm just about to replace my AMD 64 4000+ with a dual core 64 4600+ and I'd like to upgrade the graphics card next (AtI 850XT).

I'm running a DFI Lanparty that has the ability to run two Nvidia cards in SLI mode. Any recommendations on doing this or just going with a single ATI Radeon X1900 XT in the 16x PCIE slot ??

I guess I could budget up to £400

    regards

With that budget I would have recommended the 7950GX2, but there are ppl talking about them having failure rates like the 7900 series.

If it were me buying today, and I couldnt wait for the x1950, then I'd go for the x1900 without a shadow of a doubt. Or if you really want nvidia try and pick up a cpl of 512mb 7800GTX's. They are pretty much identcal performance wise to the 7900GTX with the plus side of not having to worry about if your cards are gonna crap out at any given point.

I'd say go x1900 as the number 1 choice tho.

OK, thanks for the heads-up. I wasn't aware of the failure rates of the 7950GX2.

With the x1950 coming out in September, I x1900 price will drop just after I buy one :thumbsdow

I'll take a look at the Nvidia pricing and decide from there..

I don't think the GX2 problem is anything to do with the general 7900 series memory problem, but I've read quite abit about ppl cards just popping and dying on them. To me the cooling doesn't look adequate enough, those cards are running hot and VERY close to each other.....

I was originally looking at the GX2 but after I saw them that very reason put me off big time and it looks like I may have been right too.

I'll grab a single 7800GTx and upgrade to SLI mode if I can get them cheap enough.. Looks like they are around £260 inc VAT.. each.

You'll be able to pick 2 256mb GTX's for that price second hand easily. Some really good deals on 512mb versions aswell if your lucky.

    You'll have a hard time finding 2 7800GTX 512's let alone one they're rarer than hen's teeth.

What about 2 1900XTs in Crossfire mode?

you could always get one now and then buy a crossfire master version when prices drop a bit further.:)

Agreed. Ebay will be the only bet but even that is bare of them at the mo, but if found they can be had at a bargain price, especially for the performance they give.

Yeah, after looking at the bechmarks and prices I'll probably opt for the 1900XT.

Daft question time, does crossfire require a crossfire capable motherboard (like sli does) or will it just work on anything with pcie slots ?

Ahh, I had thought that 2 pci-e-16 slots would cover it, but it does look like you need a crossfire enabled motherboard.
