I've been looking around for a replacement for my much-used and slightly ailing desktop PC. Both Scan and Novatech offer customise-them-yourself builds of pretty much the same spec and pricing, and I've used both suppliers before for components and found them fine. But are there any other similar retailers I should be looking at?

I'm not after anything particularly high end, just more reliable, up to date and perhaps faster than my present machine: Pentium dual-core E5300 2.6GHz, 4GB RAM, 300GB HDD, 1TB HDD.

    LATER...

To partially answer my own question I've just found PCSpecialist who seem pretty good. Has anybody here used them?

    Many thanks.

I use Novatech. Their mobo kits are quite good although you save a bit buying parts. PC Specialist have had a good rep in the past.

I've always built up or upgraded PC's but mine are generally higher spec and I do like to upgrade and faff about with them.

If you aren't fussed with gaming, extra drives or whatever, then I'd probably just save the hassle and buy off the shelf. £500 will get you a decent base unit, much better than what you've currently got.

Strobe, thanks for that. In the end I decided to go with PCSpecialist and in fact have just taken delivery of my new base unit: just over £500 and, as you say, a much better spec than my current machine. Now I have all the fun of transferring (most of) the accumulated programs and files from the old machine to the new...

I have used Novatech quite a bit, always had good service from them.
Scan can be cheaper but customer service isn't as good in my experience.

I have to say I have just this morning ordered a pre built system from Scan and their customer service has been second to none! Add to that what they offer at what prices doesn't seem to be bettered at the moment. I am very happy and can't wait to get the system.

I've used both Novatech and Scan for components in the past and found them excellent. The service from PC Specialist on this latest purchase was also very good. I'd use all three companies again with no qualms.

Errr...... how can you say their customer service has been "second to none" when you haven't even received your order yet? lol
Maybe save the praise till you've got the system and all's well. Then update us :smashin:
