How do you think this new model will affect the 868 prices? Am considering getting a 868 but might wait a couple of months if the prices are going to drop!

Why are you worried about what it physically looks like? Surely the image and sound are more important.

Having said that, I think it looks quite nice...

So anyone know anything else about this unit? Any other links anywhere? Anyone know if they've finally sorted out their layer change pauses?

It better be the ultimate DVD player this time, coz they've almost run out of numbers to superseed the model number with! :D

Looks very nice. Hopefully it will be out soon.

The 868 is getting reduced in price all over the place - normally a sign something new is imminent.

Physically, that looks gorgeous. Much nicer than my current flimsy looking Panasonic.

Too bad it'll probably have the chroma bug like every other Pioneer player.

Picking up an 868 tomorrow. Prices are too good at the moment. I'm sure the 989 will be excellent but the 868 appears great anyway.

Has anyone used a 868 with a PV500 and how compatible is it ?
It will be up against an SD900 and SD9500 on components for me. I'm not sure HDMI will be that much of a leap over them. if anything in particular but I'm just interested in the digital lark !

The SD350 Tosh at £80 was going to be a tester for me but I figured sod it the 868 is going for a song and it will be the last DVD player I will get, not about to get rid of my SD DVD collection in a hurry for sure !

if your using component i dont think the 868i will better the sd9500, but maybe on par with the sd900

I dont think the component output of the 868i is its strongest feature as the HDMI pic it produces is much better to my eyes(ie very good and very sharpe)

Layer change about the same as a sd900, ie not good

    Thanks Gandley !

I am buying it primarily for it's HDMI. So it will be 868 HDMI v SD900/9500 YUV.

    Is it much better ?

Yes, the 868i is still one of the best HDMI players and probaly has the sharpest pic. To get over any of its bad points you could add a scaler and take advantage of its HDMI interlaced output and have the best of both worlds.(although at a price)

But with HDMI i would rate it over the 9500 which i also own.

Hmm I would be using over component so probably not the best option for me. I have been trying to buy a DVD to replace my pioneer 444 for months but everyone I look at seems to have loads of bugs. The 868 seems ok but is not as good component wise and have not seen great reviews about it's sound (would not be using it for cd's as I have a very good player) The Denon's seem to suffer from mb and been told it's worse on panny plasma screens like my series 6 screen. This leaves me with the Arcam and Marantz which I don't really want to pay that much as I don't watch that many dvd's. Other model's like the new Marantz's DV7600 don't seem to be available yet. I do like the look of there machines though.

then perhaps rather than buying an expensive dvd player buy a scaler/deinterlacer

Or wait for the new Pio.

Having said that the 868i may indeed have a better pic than your current dvd player via component. you will need a demo to be sure.

Gandley, going with the 868 is it better to let the player upscale to 720P/1080i or simply leave my panel PV500 to it ? I am not going the external scaler route not HTPC. I just want simple display/player box solution.

If the component out on the 868 is as good as the SD900 then that is not bad at all. I am expecting great things of the HDMI though.

Depends on the native resolution of your display and the quality of its own scaler.
The pioneer 868i is quite reasonable with scaling. if your display native res is say 1280X720 then use the 720p (as this would be a 1:1 pixel match) output of the 868. Theres no point using the 1080i output at all unless you can natively display such a signal.

So my advice would be to display each res ie 480p and 720p and see what looks best to your eyes as it will vary from one display to another

    Hi guys,

I currently own a 565 and am looking to buy a lumagen HDP to feed an MXE1. I was thinking about upgrading the 565 to the 868 to use the HDMI output into the scaler. Is it worth it or will I not see much difference in the output because the scaler will do its magic tricks no matter what I feed it?

    Thanks,

    Steve

PS Ekko Star - Can I ask how much you paid for your 868?

steve in your case the only way to tell would be to get the lumagen set it up with your exsisting dvd player, then see what you think. Perhaps then try to loan a unit for demo to see if the 868i is that better.
but i think the lumagen would be the biggest step up in pic quality

tottenham court road direct have the 868i for £580

Gandley I got it at a great price. Just waiting for my HDMI cables to come through the post now.

First dibs via component against the SD900. The 868 sucks on interlaced out, the SD900 just blows it clean away. However put the 868 into PS mode and the picture improves vastly and I would say it's either there abouts or a nats whisker away from the SD900, even still.

The scaler in the 868 was making not too shabby a job of it, and the PV500 prefers to let it do the scaling. However the plasma loves the interlaced input via the Tosh. Right now the latter is ever so slightly ahead but really nothing in it.

You know Toshiba made one hell of a machine all those years ago

I'm pretty sure the HDMI at 720P will show the 868 ahead though. Can't wait !

Thanks for the reply Dustin. Sounds like a good idea to get the scaler going and then have a look at the 868.

So Ekko, what price did you get? Was it below the one that Dustin found?
