Five years ago (or so) I bought a Sony DAVS880 home theatre setup. The best I could afford at the time. I met what I later found was the common complaint with this system - lack of proper heat dissipation - but otherwise it does well enough. You can't play through an extended DVD with it though. After two hours it quits and you have to leave it a while to cool.
Now I'd like to replace the main unit but keep the 5.1 speakers. The thing is, they have odd plugs on end - I'm sure you experts are familiar with them.

Is there a suitable replacement DVD/Tuner/amp that I can use that doesn't require me to chop off these plugs? I don't mind buying Sony again.

No help on this one but I'm not surprised. I contacted Sony by email shortly after I posted that. They phoned back today to tell me there is no suitable unit that would allow me to keep the speakers.
The only option is to replace the whole thing. It seems such a waste.
Still, Sony did have the decency to phone me up; they didn't have to.
