Hi,

My 5 year old Mordaunt Short Alumni 9 sub started "buzzing", completely out of the blue last weekend.

It does it whenever it is powered up even with no input applied, or anything connected to it.

Coming to the conclusion that it's probably had it, I'm looking for a replacement.

My receiver is a Yamaha RX-V1067 and the rest of the speakers are the other Alumni models from the package.

So far I've been looking at a Yamaha NS-SW300 or a Q Acoustics 2070 to replace the sub.

I've also been wondering whether I might be better served not having a sub and replacing the front speakers with a pair of floorstanders.

The floorstanders I've been looking at are Mission MX3 or Tannoy Mercury V4i.

The budget is around £250. Does anybody have any comments or suggestions?

Edit - should have added that the primary usage is movies, very rarely do I play music.

To be perfectly honest, you'll not get any floorstanders at that price point that will give you any meaningful bass, you'll be better served getting a decent secondhand sub.
Are you restricted on size of sub and or placement, what do you use your system for, music or movies ?

I'd maybe suggest something like the BK XLS200 XLS200-DFandFF or if you could stretch a bit more the new P12-300SB Platinum P12300-SB

Fatboy, thanks for the suggestions.

Floorstanders were just an "I wonder" kind of thought. Mostly I'm just looking to replace the current sub.

Unfortunately those subs are both a little too pricey for me at the moment.

Usage is pretty much all movies, room is about 4m x 4m, not really restricted on size. Placement is a bit restricted though, without rearranging everything. Current sub is place just outside the left front speaker. Front speakers are about 6 inches either side of the tv.

The XLS200 is only a little over your budget brand new, you'd easily pick a secondhand one up in budget ....... if you can find one in the classifieds, the P12 would be more difficult to get i'd have thought, but you might be lucky with a demo unit or something, certainly worth a look.

To be honest I'd rather avoid second hand if I can. I'd be wary of buying something then having it fail leaving me in the same situation but out of pocket.

At least with a new sub I would get a warranty.

In that case your best option would be Gemini
You are really limiting your options by not considering second hand, remember that if you picked up something that wasn't very old (lot's of people get upgradeitus) especially where sub's are concerned :) Several come with 2 to 5 year warranty. If you get a quality second hand Sub, there is no reason why they won't last for years, i've had a quality Ruark Sub for over 15 years!

I actually looked at a Gemini, but was put off partly by the lack of auto on/off and partly because I sent an email to them asking a couple of questions and haven't received a reply.

If auto on/off is really important to you, which it wouldn't be for me, i'd consider connecting it to a 'Smart power strip' I'd also try giving Tom at BK a call, he will answer any questions you have, they are a really friendly and helpful lot in my experience. Maybe send them another, possibly something happened and they didn't get it ......IT can be a problem at times.
Anyway, apart from what i have suggested i'm afraid i can't be of anymore help, £250 really isn't much of a budget for a brand new sub and it really isn't much for a quality second hand one either for that matter ........ remember 'Buy cheap, buy twice' i know it's difficult if budgets are tight, but getting the subwoofer right is a pretty major thing, it's worth buying something a little bit better from a well known and respected brand that should give you 10+ years service. There is aways a market for quality used sub's too.

Hows about the Roth Oli KH30, good little sub, British made, designed by Richard Allen so should be decent enough. Has the auto on off feature as well and can be had for under your £250 budget, it was actually retailing at that price last year.

I've actually gone for the XLS200 - I found that I had a 10% off voucher if I bought from ebay and used Paypal, saving £31.50 making it £283 instead of £314. So I rang up BK and had a chat with Tom to check availability and suitability, and then ordered it through the BK ebay store.

Downward facing, black XLS200 should be with me on Monday.

Thanks for the input guys.

Top service from BK and whichever courier they use.

The new sub was delivered this morning instead of on Monday as expected.

I was out and my partner took delivery, which is why I didn't see which courier it was, and she didn't take any notice.

Not opened the box yet, that's a job for my day off tomorrow.
