Replace 8yr old DVD Sony DVP-S505D player?

I've just bought the Panasonic TH42PX70 plasma and want to make sure I do it and my DVDs justice with the best picture.

I have an old (1999) Sony DVP-S505D DVD player which I bought in Hong Kong. It's multi-region (as every player in HK always was, sensible people) and continues to serve me well.

I've read a lot of forums and asked a lot of sales staff about the merits of upscaling DVD players. The consensus seems to be that it's not worth it, I guess you just let the TV do the upscaling. Interestingly a few have said the best upscalers of DVDs are the blu-ray & HD-DVD players. I'd be tempted by these especially with HD DVD players available for $200 in the US but for the format war still raging.

As the S505D has component output I will be using that but wondered if with this player's age it is missing more (I'm not sure if it has progressive scan - does this matter?) and in this case a semi-decent upscaling DVD player would make a difference.

Any thoughts or pointers appreciated.
